China's first man in space has said that Chinese astronauts eat dog meat to keep their strength up as they orbit around the earth.
...
A selection of dishes from the Chinese Astronaut menu (2009 mission)

Day One: Lotus root porridge, crispy tofu with spring onions, braised yellow croaker fish, pork ribs with seaweed, spinach with minced garlic.

Day Two: Spicy pig skin, braised duck neck, hairy crab with ginger, chicken liver with chilli, pine nuts with sweetcorn, three-flavour soup.

Day Three: Poached egg in fermented rice soup, Harbin sausage, Huajiang dog, baby cuttlefish casserole, eel with green pepper, spicy beans with dried tofu.

Apples, pears and oranges served with every meal, as well as rice, noodles, sweet potatoes.
Its funny the things people will have hang ups about eating.

I'm off to eat my Kanga Banga's...

So?
We eat cows, and India don't protest, we eat pigs and Israel don't protest.
Some African tribes still eat people in their rituals, and no one seems to object.

Would you say you are prepared to meet aliens?

I read that as "eat aliens" first time around.

Interesting. I wouldn't eat a dog of mine, but I'd have no problem eating dog provided the same concerns I have about all the other meat I eat were met; namely, that it was treated and slaughtered humanely before it wound up on my plate. I don't have objection to people eating animals of any sort, but I have serious objections to the mistreatment and neglect of said animals prior to the slaughter - butcher - prepare - plate process chain.

This sometimes is exactly the issue with traditional Chinese cuisine. Some dishes are really disturbing by commonplace Western standards. Please think twice even before following the link.

Indeed. There are particular dogs I would have no objection to eating at all, specifically the one next door that can never shut up.

I don't want to imagine what Chinese would think about the typical European (astronaut) dishes. Must be very exotic for their tastes.

Eating animals is eating animals. Beside the taste and stringiness, I do not see a difference between eating a cow, a big or a dog. If you just imagine it often enough, it actually becomes equally disgusting. You are eating life/beings.

I'm going to have a few burgers in about 1 and a half hours from now, so I better stop to imagine such things for now :)

Mangled, grinded and chopped plants and fermented milk on your meat??????? How cruel are you to your friends, the plants!

I wonder if it's possible to eat paper.
Maybe, with the right salad...

You are eating life/beings.

Eating plants and fungi is also eating life/beings. Indeed, eating cheese is eating life/beings, imagine all the bacteria that are being killed...

Of course, this all becomes very complicated when we talk about alien kingdoms of life. Or even earthly organisms- is anyone going to argue for the rights of a jellyfish or sponge?

Indeed. Looking through all the food items I can't help to be under the impression that they are exotic, but then again western astronaut dishes can also be quite diverse at times.

Perhaps this has something to do with tasteless paste from a tube not being psychologically stimulating...

I think we all know the differences between animals and plants (and carnivore and herbivore) ;)

The problem of being an intelligent omnivore species - everyone have their own tastes and think nothing they don't know of exists.

I heard the Chinese find eating caviar utterly disgusting. If some Chinese member isn't minding, could they say if it's true?

This is what I meant few posts above: if you can accept another's eating culture, you've passed a test for tolerance.

I couldn't see myself eating dog, caviar, snails or anything like that yet I love a good steak and I guess that makes me something of a hypocrite really.

Which just goes to prove that we all have our own tastes. I guess Xyon said it the best "I'd have no problem eating dog provided the same concerns I have about all the other meat I eat were met; namely, that it was treated and slaughtered humanely".
