Gaming Dwarf Fortress discussion

I use 3x3 currently, but would prefer bigger maps if possible... otherwise the distance between fortress and map edge is pretty small.
Alright, so your machine isn't that limited. :)

Standard 4x4 size is usually large enough for the typical fortress, especially with half-intelligent zoning (industrial floor with many staircases up or down to storage floor, residence floor directly above main floor, etc.) favored over messy single-z sprawls.

Sounds intresting... and is it bad when you are attacked by 30 goblins all riding blind cave bears, 20 giant war toads... and 8 war cave dragons... doesn't help when all my marksdwarves decide to be hero's and charge the horde singlehandedly, the enemy is coming up the river down the canyon into the fotress through my hospital well... well... ...losing is fun...

It is still made in 2004. Only the GPU and one HDD are a bit newer. But my bank account tells me, that I can now start gathering offerings for a new Notebook with style.

I won't participate as an overseer (way too little expierience)

I think you should participate too. The more players, the more fun is the game for everyone, and, in fact, I suppose having less experienced players might make things even more !!FUN!! ;) If everyone agrees, I'd be happy to play with you.

Anyone have requests for the embarkment? Soil? Volcano, perhaps?

I'd say there should at least be a little soil to make farming easier in the beginning. A stream/river would also be great to have. Other than that, well, don't put it too far away from goblins and other races ;)

I'd love to play... you can make me the captain of the guard or something.

And try to find where three rivers meet, that's where mine is (well, was before the cave dragons decided to open 'er up) the northern river was raised about 12 floors above the other two, a large lake with a waterfall and exposed lignite, coal, tetheradite, limestone etc... and the waterfall was bugged to make people jump off... killed about 20-40 goblins with it :)

I'm only an occasional player, and the occasions usually lie so far appart that I need the tutorial every time to get the essential basics going. Plus, my current family situation really doesn't grant me the occasion... :(

I think I would like to be third or fourth or so in line as to not lay down an unfavorable foundation. :P And jedidia should definitely participate! Maybe I'll look almost average then. ;)

I agree with Rtyh-12, even if you aren't a veteran, please go ahead and reign for a year! (I'd just prefer that, for any total newbies out there, perhaps wait until your fortunes have risen and fallen a few times on your own before making an attempt at a succession game. ;))

Jedidia, no one'll blame you if you'd like to sit it out for personal reasons. :tiphat:

I'd like to compose a list of prospective players, so please post:
- Whether you'd like to be a dwarf, and what profession you would like to have. Disclaimer: we are in no way responsible for any genderbending which may or may not occur. :P
- Whether you'd like an annual term as Overseer, and ideally which year you would like.
- Whether you'd like to keep a journal separate from your Overseer term, building on the life of your namesake dwarf. This way, the current overseer can keep an eye on your dwarf and inform you of what he/she is doing.

Can I be a Goblin Law-Giver?

I would like a year greater than two.
I'll probably dwarf myself once I become overseer.

I've run 0.34.11, but I can of course use whatever is the latest stable build. The only world I've made probably had 'medium' settings all around, so I believe my poor little laptop should handle whatever is made. (it took like 30 minutes to generate the world! 250 years with 47000 historical figures)

To clarify, since we're not likely to have many volunteers, go ahead and demand more terms as overseer. ;)

I could probably manage to run the fort for a year or two, no promises on it not failing catastrophically though :P

Currently running a fort to refresh my 'skills' and judging how easily I can complete a year. (not too difficult)
Let's please at least have a starting location that doesn't spell certain doom. (boiling temperatures, frozen tundra, no vegetation, evil biome, savagery, etc.)

This practice fortress has gone well. Just two thieves so far. The first one was immediately beat to hell by a fisher dwarf, the next one glanced at the fort and then ran full-speed out of there.

I'll join, note that my first successful fortress is being overrun by cave dragons... So I'll only be a backup overseer, but I'll take some of the later years if needed. I would like to be a dwarf craftsman, all around jewels wood stone metal bone, everything but with a specialty in jewel and metal.

I'll try to keep a journal for myself, just pm me info about what my dorf is doing and his happiness, why he is so etc... I'll try to keep up with it.

Also, Mabye an adventurer succession game, Mabye 2-3 game week turns, Mabye more if needed.

What about something like this:

Year 1 - Player A
Year 2 - Player B
Year 3 - Player A
Year 4 - Player B
Year 5 - Player C
Year 6 - Player D
Year 7 - Player C
Year 8 - Player D
...

Basically, a pair plays two years alternately, then we move on to the next pair, which does the same. This method not only doubles the number of years we play, but it also means that everyone gets to see with their own eyes what state the fortress is in after one year of being run by another person, which IMO would be pretty interesting.

That sounds pretty good, as long as the fortress lasts long enough. I would also be fine with nearly any other plan.

I figured that whenever the fortress crumbled to its end, anyone could send an adventurer into the final save to explore its history.

Hm, there's an idea. We just might run into problems if it collapses in say Year 4, having seen only two Overseers.

The tentative list is this at present:
Code:
Izack: Metalcrafter, Overseer year 1
Rtyh-12: Overseer year 2
Quick_Nick: Self-dwarfing, Overseer year 3
Urwumpe: Militia Commander, Overseer year 4
KuatYards: Crafstdwarf, Capt, Overseer year 5
woo482: Overseer year 6

At least I can get some chances for giving goblins MY laws...

I'm just not sure Goblin Lawgiver is a position the gobbos would feel appropriate for a dwarf to fill. :P

My law. They are not asked. Its a dwarfocracy.

I spare not the hammer, I spare not the sword, this day will ring with my name.

Damn, such a position like militia commander only shows me from my best side.

Urwumpe took joy in slaughter lately.
