ESA to recruit new European astronauts.

I think any Orbiteer should be well qualified! We have thousands of hours in space!

/R

As a well qualified wimp, I think I'll wait a bit!

Surprised this is only the third intake, I thought there would have been more.

There was one last year as well. I applied for that and apparently it's being merged with this year's round of appications. Not quite figured out why they have decided to do it this way.
Maybe no-one from last time around was deemed acceptable ;)

I thought that, but wasn't sure, and with m6 being poorly couldn't check. Maybe better luck this time, we all get points for perserverance!

Well they havn't actually said I'm not accepted. They have told everyone who applied last year that their application won't be considered until May.

I know I won't be selected though, minimum age is 27.

Anyway. There was a thread on m6 about it, I thought it was you who posted it actually! I've tried several times to look for it (even when the forum search was working properly) but never managed to turn it up. Began to think it was just a fake memory from me, but as you have it to I guess I am not going completely mad yet.

I think it was, I remember the application pages; my educational references weren't good enough. I've only got the one Nobel Prize;)

As long as they get their act together this year. Maybe there is some final push to get ESA more into human spaceflight. It gets the publicity, and gets the money.
Might see Hermes make a comeback...

There is a lot of talk about hacking the ATV into a manned vehicle, slap some seats in it, fiddle with the life support and add a heat shield on the back..can't be too hard ;)
Would be absolutely great to see though. I was damned proud of ESA for getting the ATV up there, and I'd be a thousand times more proud to see Europe manage to have their own manned launcher/spacecraft, it'd be a great moment.

I know I won't be selected though, minimum age is 27.

Hey, I could apply. I fail all other criteria for getting selected, but hey!

There's no good reason not to apply (unless you're not European). Remember, everything is waiverable, you just need to ask.

Same thing for the applications NASA is accepting, they're going be due pretty soon.

I would not even pass the medical checks as first step, unless I attempt corruption. Next I currently lack the academic degree, something which I plan to change this year... but becoming one of the best in my field will be hard... very hard.

Hah, just noticed this.

I know two of those people from university. One of them would fail the medical and the other hasn't got a hope in hell's chance of passing the psychological tests.

Summary: Another superb job by the BBC.

Notebook, I guess they decided to put some British stuff in the background to make it look more 'inviting' to British applicants.
IMO it would've been more appropriate to use something a bit more modern, maybe the interview was arranged at short notice or something.

(edit) If Britain does get an astronaut I guarantee it'll be that Kevin chap, btw. Just seen his CV: holy crap.

Well, I suppose they were the best known? of any UK launchers, and Black Arrow did put up a satellite!
I think the item was done in the Science Museum, they are having a retrospective of UK technology at the moment. Its got Dan Dare and...thats about it.
Good luck to all who apply, especially yourself, its quite a challenge, but its quite a view.

Why don't you follow the trends and make a TV show like "Astronaut idol?"

With workshops like "Microgravity coaching", "Basic spaceflight" and "what's that tube over there?"

UK tv is too far gone to appreciate any irony in a programme called "Astonaut Idol", probably rename it "Astronaut Idle"...

Well, I have the age, and knowing bosnian it would be a breeze to learn russian, but that's about everything...

(I don't expect my quarter hour flight in a glider counts for anything...)

I'm not even European, I have no academic credentials and my only real qualifications are a bunch of meaningless IT certifications and a private pilot's license. I'm applying anyway.
