This is an interesting thought experiment (and documentary). What if the Earth was going to be destroyed? What if we had to save the lineage of the human race, and had 75 years to do it? Is it possible? Could we move a small population of people to a habitable planet?

I'm not saying I agree with all the conclusions of this show, but I think it's an important question to consider.

That question has already popped up a few times here. The general consensus seems to be that a disaster that rips the earth appart completely is extremely unlikely, and that in any other case a group of people that bunker in reeeeeal good has a much higher chance of survival and repopulation of the earth than a group sent away to an unknow destination in a spaceship built of untested technology that will have to last for decades or even centuries.

Be careful when your smartphone suddenly has apps crashing and strange glitches or the data rates dropping - it could be because of a deadly gamma ray burst (GRB, AKA "Planet destroyer beam") from a nearby Wolf-Rayet-Star(Death Star), that will destroy all life on Earth in the next days. Don't ignore it.

Why not? There'd be bugger all I could do about it.
