And of course these ... the drumming is still a reference... the guitar parts are easier.

Hmm... In no particular order except for the first one:

Coheed and Cambria - By far my most favorite band, I've been listening to the same 5-6 albums for years pretty much every day and I keep coming back for more. Also, the band's albums and songs follow a story which is detailed in a series of comic books written by the lead singer, very cool.

Then the others I hop around:

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Attention
Acceptance
The Prize Fighter Inferno (Co & Ca solo-project)
Motley Crue
Iron Maiden
Killswitch Engage
etc.

Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Green Day, Iron Maiden, Queen, and Europe.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Rush.

Or Alice Cooper.

Or Chicago, if that qualifies.

Just to name a few. ;)

Not mentioned so far, Cream.

edit...
thinking about it, with Clapton in mind I have to add Derek and the Dominoes as well. Simply for "Layla".

That's a pretty tough question for me. I've got a very eclectic music collection. From AC/DC to ZZ Top and plenty in-between. I've got nearly everything Eric Clapton has released, same for Pink Floyd, lots of Beatles too. George Thorogood, Buddy Guy, (The Reverend) Al Green, Miles Davis, Chicago, Blues Brothers and the list goes on.

So really my favorite rock band would depend on the mood that I'm in. Currently mellowing out with The Moody Blues. Most of their stuff is not exactly rock, but "Question" is pretty awesome.

Beatles
Iron Maiden
Rush
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Metallica
Os Mutantes
Pink Floyd

Among other bands...

I'm not that much into ranking music, but I'd like to add some that aren't mentioned yet.

Toto
Aerosmith
Extreme

What?
No stoneys here?

Only the greatest Rock'n Roll band evah.

Oh, and because Urwumpe forgot to post an example:

I wouldn't say that todays music is aweful. Yes, a lot of todays music is aweful. But to blame are the people who buy such trash, not the people who produce it. Also, there are many contemporary bands, who know how to rock:

Knorkator - Extremely skilled entertainers.
Die Ärzte - We both grew up together.
Blind Guardian - Epic! Just Epic!
Rammstein - Any questions? RRRrrreally?
Iron Maiden - Do I need to say anything?
Airbourne - Something to see live

Nice list! :RnR1: :headbang:

Great God in boots, why haven't I posted here?
Well anyways, my two favorite (and really the only ones I listen to) are Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Floyd because of the deep intellectual meanings and crap, and Zeppelin for their variation in style and (mostly) heavy sound.

Old: Scorpions.

New: Avenged Sevenfold.

Yeah, a lot of new music is crap, but there is a ton of good stuff to be found as well. And don't forget, a lot of old bands aren't all that great either. IMO the Rolling Stones always have and always will suck, there's a reason their songs are in every year 1 beginner's guitar book. There is nothing creative or interesting going on there at all. Sammy Hagar and Stephen Tyler both sing like idiots and are prone to doing irritating things instead of just singing. Motley Crue's songs were all written by horny 14-year-olds. AC/DC makes the same album over and over and over.

Expanded old favorite list: Thin Lizzy, Alice in Chains, Alice Cooper, Queensryche

Expanded new (post-'90) list: All That Remains, Bullet for my Valentine, Foo Fighters, Five Finger Death Punch, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Killswitch Engage, The Offspring, Rob Zombie, Rise Against, Seether, Sevendust, Shinedown, Slipknot, Stone Sour
