Project First addon - have multiple questions

Thanks george! I'm downloading Gmax now, and I'll try and work out the texturing from there.

OK - if you need any help with Gmax, let me know. It has a score of brilliant tools (such as UVWmap), but you will need to download the .msh exporter:

http://www.nestadlinn.de/orbiter/downloads/max2msh13.zip

I have found that the direct .MSH esporter doesn't work for me, but you can dump it to a text file (The Gmax listener) and save that as a .MSH file. You will need the 'grablistener' program from this package:

http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=1147

Just run it with the listener window open, and save as (filename).msh.

Thanks for everything so far! I've managed to get a basic, blocky texture projected from the nose of the spacecraft so far, but that's about it.

Do you tend to use something like where one texture is 'projected' (I hope that's the right word) onto the nose, another onto the top, etc? If so, I can't work out how to get Gmax to do this (yet).

EDIT: Do I need to use something other than the 'UVW mapping' to do this?

If the nose and body of the spacecraft are seperate objects, you can create a texture for each and assign them independently with different UVW co-ordinates each. If they are all one, you will need to edit the image to make the right parts appear in the right places (as far as I know). UVWmapping has many projection options (planar, cylindrical, spherical, etc...) plus options to change the stretch and compression of the texture, and make it fit over the mesh.

Mainly, experiment!

If I have a ship that's 100m long, how can I get a decent resolution texture mapped onto it without having a ridiculously large bitmap?

Multiple textures (or tiling)

Multiple textures (or tiling)

So if I wanted to texture a wing, would I create a texture for one part of the wing, and then just apply it repeatedly to different parts of the wing?
