hi everyone,

Does anyone have or know of a good open source image editor?

I'm looking for a free or opensource image editor - something that has layers. I've used photoshop, but I don't want to purchase it for the computer I'm on now.

I found http://www.splashup.com/. It's nice, but for me, I feel apprehensive about uploading any pictures to this app, as it my be stored on some online server.

Thanks!

Paint.net is free and has layers.

I think that GIMP has layers. I used it to make my signature.

Edit: :ninja:'d by Urwumpe

The only thing that baffles me, is how to create good shapes with it. The only shapes I can really make are the basic Square, Rectangle, and Circle shapes.

If you`re already somewhat used to photoshop, try a copy of GimpShop. Gimp based but morphed to look more like Photoshop. Also free, also layers, also extensible.

If you are after vector graphics, I would suggest Inkscape, maybe even LibreDraw. Lotsa choices ... as usual, Google is your friend.

Cheers

Pen Tool

It's intended purpose and function is to create shapes:

This entire picture was drawn with the pen tool:

The GIMP has pretty much everything you could need, EXCEPT for CMYK-recalc. But then again, no-one has that, because Adobe got a bloody patent on it. Which means, if you actually have to print something on the professional level, you can forgett just about everything and go buy Photoshop. I wonder when that Patent is going to run out...

I don't really know if this is what you're talking about, since I don't ever use CMYK color-spaces. But if you click the color and then the printer-icon, then it has 4 CMYK sliders that go from 0 to 100. Is that what you mean? You can manipulate color with them.
