I only use facebook to communicate with 'Harry'
He's like 8 hours away, in Canada, so seeing him in person is impossible.

And the international call rates are like $50 an hour!
Skype is your friend for this one. I used it when I was away in Africa last year. Really really handy

BTW in 16 minutes it will be 7 days exactly till the launch of Atlantis.
I could have done with it being an hour or two later. For the last shuttle I'm going to get home and get everything set up and watch about the last hour of the buildup.

I need a bigger monitor.

Ahh, NASA TV on TV... It'll probably take some years for that to cross the Atlantic.

I'm not sure how different it is for other parts of the world, or other age groups, but for me (mid teens american), I can say that Facebook has done anything less then making is more anti-social. We realize as much as you all that chatting someone on Facebook doesn't quite suffice for hanging out. Much of the time, Facebook serves as a way for people to organize things to do. Other generations would make a call, but now we just talk on Facebook- is that less social? I don't see why it should be considered so- its just a new form of socializing. Why is it less interaction than a phonecall?

I started using facebook back in the days when you had to have a .edu e-mail to sign up during my first year of college. Back then it was a great way to share pictures and cyber-stalk your classmates. I don't think much useful human communication happens there, but I still log-in to look at pictures, read/post articles that I find intriguing, and to get headlines from my network of friends who have since dissipated across the world after we graduated. Many of us are working and sadly don't have the time to sit down and have a call or are too far apart for a chat, but it is still nice to somehow be a part of their lives.

I'm giving Google + a spin right now largely because the features get rid of some of my biggest facebook complaints, largely that the privacy management is impossibly difficult and because I got an invite on day 1 so I figured it'd be fun to mess around with before it got flooded with users.

Having logged on to see what it was like it seems that Google peeled the Facebook sticker of the top and stuck a google one on in its place. It really seems (to all intents and purposes) identical.
