Via CollectSpace.com, French astronaut Claudie Haignere apparently attempted suicide for unknown reasons. :( Why would anyone with her achievements do something like that?
First Frenchwoman in space hospitalised after suicide attempt

PARIS (AFP) — The first Frenchwoman in space and former government minister Claudie Haignere was hospitalised late Tuesday after attempting suicide, a French government source said.
Haignere, 51, was rushed to hospital after being discovered at her Paris home, where according to another source, she had overdosed on pills. She was conscious when hospitalized, the source said.
Haignere was an astronaut with the French space agency CNES, flying on a mission to the MIR space station in 1996 and to the International Space Station in 2001, the first European woman to do so.
She later entered politics, serving as minister for research and new technologies from June 2002 to March 2004, before becoming European Affairs minister in the government of Jean-Pierre Raffarin, a post she held until May 2005.
She is married to another French astronaut, Jean-Pierre Haignere, who flew on two missions to the MIR space station, in 1993 and 1999, the second for a six-month stay.

I don't think it's appropriate to discuss that.

And another space person doing self-destructive things. I'm surprised once again. Lisa Nowak and the gun fight at NASA some time ago surprised me already.

Space flight and aviation people don't seem to be something special, and they're obviously not above-average fun-loving, as they often tend to demonstrate. Manned space flight seems to be a kind of show business in front of cameras... always fun, always big happiness...

I heard some thing about a gun fight wear was it ? was it at Johnson Space Centre ?

A gun fight at NASA? Never heard of that.

It was at a Houston facility (don't think it was JSC) and it was a your "typical" disgruntled/psycho ex-employee lashing out. :(

Again, astronauts are people too and subject to all the issues of the rest of us. I hope she recovers and gets help.

Like every other person to go into space, she is human. Who knows why she tried to commit suicide.

This one astronaut got pissed when she found out her boyfriend (another astronaut) was doing some "docking" with another girl. What did she do? Drive nonstop from KSC to JSC, buy some pepper spray and a bat, and attack the other girl. She was later removed and never went into space.

Different events.

:ditto:
The "Right Stuff" is history now.

Who had the "Right stuff" anyway?! Every SINGLE astronaunt and cosmonaunt has their own problems but back in the 60's a lot of it was hushed up in the rush to beat the Russians.

As Simonpro said, this is a personal matter for Haignere and her loved ones. This topic isn't worthy of discussion.

Right. I'm sure her astronaut career is a very small part of her life, even if it is the only thing the public knows.

Well, just because one is an astronaut with great accomplishments does not mean they are not prone to depression. Everyone is.

I hope she is doing okay. We should keep her in our thoughts.

No, it's news and it's public knowledge. We just act all defensive because she's an astronaut. If she was a politician, we'd be cracking jokes about it.

Oops, wait a minute:

What do you know? She IS a politician.

M6 had a bad habit of trying to shut down discussion of astronauts with problems. If it's news, it's fair game, unless Tex says otherwise. And unless we're being disrespectful, there's no reason why these things canot be discussed.

THERE WAS A GUNFIGHT IN NASA!!?!?!?!

I don't think it's appropriate to discuss that.

As I remember, you were the big advocate of "no censorship" on M6.

While sad, it does remind us that people make mistakes and people do have problems.

Let's hope the best for her. And those that need silence are free to do so.;)

Please lose the caps and the crazy punctuation. A link was already provided and such 'surprise' just isn't necessary.

Excellent post! :speakcool:
Can't say much else. ;)

And please bother to do some basic research before chiming in with half truths or cruel distortions. Just because you've heard it, or laughed about it with friends, vaguely seem to remember it, doesn't make it true.
