Doesn't look like a real warbird to me. More like one of those 3/4 scale repros. Guess we'll know for sure when more info comes out.

I'm no expert, but I found a picture of him in his PT-22 prior to the crash:

and a Google search of the N number (NC53178) gave me this article from AOPA. Seems that PT-22 is the real McCoy.

The ailerons are both up. I hope that was just post-crash damage and not the cause of the accident (cross rigged controls).

If you don't land infront of a hospital a golf course is really the place you'll most likely find doctors, quite a smart place to crash your plane at.
