My question is a little different. If we have to put a space settlement in the sun facing polar orbit of mercury what will be its altitude and why?
If our settlement is related with mining on mercury and bringing materials on mercury. Please answer my question. I'll be really grateful. :hailprobe:

Whatever altitude you want, because Mercury doesn't have an atmosphere to slow you down.

I thought Mercury had a very slim atmosphere. Either way, nothing would slow you down like Hielor said.

Mercury is too small and hot for its gravity to retain any significant atmosphere over long periods of time; however, it does have a "tenuous surface-bounded exosphere" containing hydrogen, helium, oxygen, sodium, calcium, potassium and others. This exosphere is not stable—atoms are continuously lost and replenished from a variety of sources. Hydrogen and helium atoms probably come from the solar wind, diffusing into Mercury’s magnetosphere before later escaping back into space.
