Question Holding one's breath

The human body only needs oxygen at a partial pressure of about 0.16 bar.

So if you allowed several hours in a 0.16 bar environment of pure oxygen, that would allow most of the nitrogen to escape your blood.

The question is, would your body be able to function with that pressure differential. It would be like trying to snorkel at 1.6 m, except with the pressure on the inside not the outside.

The question is: for how long? Because at that low pressure the body does not recover anymore. Even when breathing oxygen. It's only a question of time. Not a question of if.

On Mount Everest you can't last very long with and without an oxygen mask. And it's still as twice as much pressure up there (about 0.3 bar). You brain bloats and causes a headache, some people have a blurry view, etc. Mountaineer say it feels like you suffer from an influenza up there. Most people don't even manage to get up there. I think it's only about 20%, with oxygen. Without oxygen it's even less. The human body simply is not made for such a low pressure environment. I'd say: don't even think about being exposed to vacuum or near vacuum. Very bad idea :)

Warning about "snorkeling" : there have been a lot of accidents with that, even at very low dephts (50 cm). The nitrogen/oxygen mix is not regulated (as it is the case with autonomous diving gear), so the idea of a long snorkel doesn't work.

It does not work anyway. I tried to do so with a self-made 1 meter snorkel when I was about 16. I remember it was impossible to breath due to the water pressure. That's why long snorkels are sold with a compressor and diving regulator. You can buy those for cleaning your yacht but also for snorkeling.
