How do I get into space in X-Plane 10?

Hi, TCR_500!

I don't even have x-plane v9 anymore. I now have x-plane v10.25 64 bit. Thanks!

Cheers,
Vincent

I'm brand new here...I'm a little confused about X-Plane. I have the latest updated Xplane 10 (I use the 64 bit version). But I have no more ability to go into outer space like I did with earlier versions. Where is that ability in v10? Am I missing something?

Cheers,
Bill

Look, I am not sure if you have maybe missed it. This is the forum for the Orbiter space flight simulator. Not XPlane, which has its support forum on the laminar research homepage.

I think this person knows, that is why he quoted an O-F member that mentioned also owning X-plane.

Actually, I find this to be a perfectly reasonable question to ask on this forum. Spaceflight is probably a bit of a niche for X-plane. Perhaps not many on the X-plane forum have tried. However, if you like spaceflight enough to do in X-plane, then you probably own Orbiter as well. (I myself dabbled in X-plane 9 before I found Orbiter.)

I don't own X-plane 10, but I hope you get an answer.

You also believe it is perfectly reasonable to ask your butcher for bread, after all he also eats it?

Thanks boogabooga! I didn't start this topic. ;-)

I think this was supposed to be in the DG in X-Plane thread...

You must pardon my fellow forum members they take Orbiter very seriously from a science/orbital mechanics perspective. To answer your question the best I can is I to have used X-plane 10 with the space shuttle mars low earth orbit ....Best I can tell you and being brutally honest and straightforward the best to hope for in X-plane is sub-orbital flight with a very limited realism feeling to it. I tried it one time and honestly thought it was a joke. Maybe it was orbiter and its realism in relation to "how would it really be in zero gravity" that has me spoiled and closed minded. Lets just say I was very disappointed. X-plane has a way to go in development in that regard IMO. Thats it in a nutshell. If you want eye candy and to fly in earths atmosphere in Xplane thats one thing but at 80,000 FT and higher its Orbiter In my book
But to answer your question use the X-15 or SR-71 or by using xplanes version of scenario editor use the space shuttle starting in orbit seeing as how they have a space shuttle model but no shuttle stack to launch vertically from a launch pad which IMO as I am a shuttle fan completely pissed me off..just saying. How do you have a space shuttle and the model is beautifull but no way to launch it? What were they thinking over there at laminar? IMO its a waste of a beautiful model! /end rant :hide:

Wait, what exactly is the problem?

Stupid question, but are you flying something that is intended to fly into space?

Your craft is no longer powerful enough to fly to space? The simulation breaks down above a certain altitude? The atmosphere extends to infinity? The X-Plane earth is actually flat? etc...

BTW, I can confirm that orbits were possible in X-Plane 9.

Hello Racer,

I didn't mean to open a can of worms here! It was my very 1st post (a quoted reply/question to another person) after joining - I had 783 unread posts to read and this one caught my eye. I have Xplane 9 and 10 but hardly touch them. My main flight sims are FSX FS9.1 and Prepar3D. I was getting bored of airline ops and saw Orbiter.

Now that I am up and running, I love it. Docking in orbit is not easy, but I managed after I got the feel and perspective right.

I can't see myself messing around with Xplane at all as I've spent a lot of bucks on the "other" simulators. I simply don't like Xplane's interface and summer only season. I don't want to spend more on addons for it. I am very disappointed with Xplane 10 and deleted the entire folder last week. It was a personal decision so please (other lovers of it) don't crucify me here.

BTW - Lockheed Martin's Prepar3D (developed from FSX) has the capability to "fly" in "inner space" (the ocean) - so they say. It's very expensive IMO and the different licensing categories can be confusing. So far, I only notice that it is a "glorified" version of FSX with many bug fixes and eye candy. I find it difficult to comprehend Lockheed Martin's interest in purchasing the source code for it from MS Corporation. C'est La Vie!!

Cheers folks.

Just don't delete your last Orbiter folder.

Prepar3D is intended to be a commercial-level simulator, and as such is marketed at businesses and the military. That explains the pricetag.

don't crucify me here.

We won't. We simply put you 500 km x 10 km orbit without fuel and heatshield. :P

On serious note question was perfectly valid as it was posted in brighton lounge. And TBH I'd also like to know the answer what are limitations of X-Plane here (lack of time prevents me from deep investigation of the problem).
