AttitudeMFD How do I place shuttle directly under the R-Bar?

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone may be able to tell me how to position the shuttle directly under the R-bar for pre-TORVA procedure...I use the Guidance and Control MFD to do all the burns and rendezvous and this puts me on station keeping with the ISS..but not necessarily under the r-bar..
Is there a way of inputting information into the Attitude MFD to align perfectly with the R-bar..not sure what pitch, yaw and roll info the put in..

Rendezvous works very well to get on the R-bar of the station. Use Attitude MFD in Velocity mode, pitch roll and yaw all at zero, that will get you in the correct LVLH orientation.

When you are getting close, turn on Rendezvous and set the time to 2400, or abouts. Then increase and decrease until you get an arrival velocity that is something that can be managed, somthing like 20-40. Then open the burn vector view and go to work. I recommend using Rendezvous in an external MFD, as it has a nasty tendency of resetting itself.

Then it is a breeze to use Atittude MFD for the RPM and the TORVA. Once on V-bar, switch Attitude MFD back to Velocity mode, only now set it to Pitch-90 and Roll/Yaw-0. Use translation thrusters to close in on the PMA-2.

Btw, what is Guidance and Control MFD, I don't recall ever hearing about that one.
 
Thanks guys for taking the effort to reply - I really appreciate it..like I say, I have no problem reaching the ISS...using the Guidance MFD (Cras - it's the STSGuidance MFD which is included in David413's shuttle expansion pack)..it does all your alignment with the ISS and rendezvous...the problem I have is when I reach the ISS, I could be in any orientation with ref to the ISS, so was wondering how to actually manoever the shuttle to be on the R-bar..then I could just perform a TORVA..
So how do I actually use the Rendezvous MFD to get onto the R-bar?..what information do I need to input?..or do I have to manually position the shuttle?..your help is greatly appreciated...
 
Rendezvous works by getting your vessel to be in the same location as the target vessel at the time you specify. So if you enter the Tm value to something nuts like 500 seconds, then it will calculate the burn that is reqiured for you to reach that target in 500 seconds, regardless of any other parameter. It does display some good information to go along with that, for one the relative path that your vessel is going to take to reach the target, and the speed your vessel will be going at the meeting in relation to the target.


Now if you launch the Shuttle into a proper orbiter, you should be fairly well aligned with the station and already at a lower orbit, otherwise you will never catch up. Turn on Rendezvous and enter the ISS as the target. It will say something like "Too far away". That is fine, just wait until you catch up.

It will automatically spring to life when you are close enough to the ISS. At this point, I recommend getting the ISS into LVLH orientation. Then back at the shuttle, in RendMFD, seet the time for 2400. This is a good starting point. Then increase the time and see if the relative velocity for the rendezvous goes down. Keep increasing the time until that number gets small, small enough that you can manage it when you get close to the station, essentially, small enough that you can stop and do the RPM before flying past it.

Once the time is set up, you will see on the diagram your current path, which is in green, to the path required to meet the station at the time dictated, which is in grey.

Open the BV view and you will see something very familiar if you use IMFD. Take rotational control of the shuttle, line up the x so it is in the o, and fire the OMS to make dV as close to zero as you can get it. When approaching zero you will notice the x likes to dance away. At this point you are best off if you try to lower dV with translation controls.

Go back to the main RMFD page and you should see the green and grey paths are now identical. As the shuttle moves along the path, it will be marked in BRIGHT green.

Open Attitude MFD, and set it to Velocity mode, setting pitch roll and yaw to zero. This will lock you into LVLH. From now on, leave the RCS into translation, and monitor the burn vetcor screen and make the small corrections required to keep dV as close to zero as possible.

If you are using Davids' ISS, you can then use RPOP to see what your distance and the deltas are for the x y and z axis, so you can best line up with the station on the lateral axis, this will be important when getting close. If you are using ISS 3.2, RPOP does not seem to work so well with this, but it can still be used to an extent. If you are using a CMG with the station, RPOPs displays will become irratic but still can provide a rought guide as to what is going on.

RPOP is also useful as it provides the distance between yourself and the station in feet, so you can follow the NASA checklists with ease.
As you get close to the station, you should being to see it in the upper windows of the aft flight deck station. There is a chance that it will be behind you as you approach it. Look at the Rendezvous MFD and see how straight the approach course is. If it is quite smooth near the end, the station will always be infront. If there is a little bit of a lip, it is because you are going to overshoot the station and then meet up with it as your continue to increase your altitude, which means it will appear to you from aft of the Shuttle.
Keep an eye on the lateral axis in RPOP to ensure it is as close to zero as possible at this point, as that wil lmake visual contact with the station much easier.

Once you have a visual of the station, you can kill Rendezvous MFD, and stick with RPOP and Attitude MFD. Once you feel the station is correctly centerd on the Y axis, the lateral one, you can switvch Attitude mFD to target mode, select ISS, and trim out the lateral right to left axis which is useful. But once it is trimmed, Atttude MFD will release the shuttle, and you should go back and reactivate Velocity mode 0P 0R 0Y.

Keep LVLH, and adjust your position with translation controls. If you can use the docking cam, keep the reticle centered on the Z truss. Once RPOP says you are 600 feet away from the station CG, trim out the shuttle so you are no longer moving in any direction relative to the station. You can do this with Attitude MFD, but make sure you are in the normal VC and not the docking cam, this is because the docking cam remaps the thrust controls to the new perspective, a change which AttMFD does not respect.

If you are on the daylight side of earth, you can go to AttMFDs Target page again, and activate RPM, which will automatically pitch the Shuttle. But it does not automatically kill the rotation. That is left up to you. When you get close, turn off RPM mode and make attitude adjustments to get back on LVLH.

Then, you can begin the Torva. In Target mode in AttMFD, actiave the TOR mode and it will automatically put the shuttle in the .10 degree a second pitch nose up.

Apply small forward translations in short bursts to build the nice cirlce path that will take you from the R-Bar to the V-Bar, watch your distance. Do not drift away from the station, and do not get any closer to is than 450 feet until established on the V-Bar.

Once close to the V-Bar, kill AttMFDs, TOR, and go back to the Velocity Mode, but this time you want Pitch 90. This will put you in the correct attitude for docking.

You will need to apply some translation quickly as the shuttle will continue to move upwards. Then translate towards the docking port and center the reticle with the guides on the PMA. Go not faster than .40 feet a second until about 200 feet, then slow down to about .20 feet a sceond, then dock at about .10 feet a second. Once docked, Att MFD will automatically turn off and put the shuttle into free-drift. You can switch over to the ISS and do likewise.

Can you elaborate or post a scenario here? RPOP should be working fine with any target vessel and any focus vessel. I'm having no such problems as you describe here.

with ISS 3.2, the axis are off, and thus when I put the ISS in LVLH, RPOP will think I am not coming from underneath the station, but from above. And with CMG on, the rate of change displays will jump, but this is not an issue with RPOP, instead it is an issue with the way the CMG works to maintain attitude. I just installed a new CMG 2.0 into the scenario that works better and prevents visual suttering and jumping, so I will fly to it now and see if the same thing occurs.

I will take some pics and find a scenario where this happens, but I am not sure how successful I can be. The last time I promised to get you a scenario because of the OBSS drift in the RMS arm, it never happened to me again, so I was unable to supply you with a file.

Here is a pic during the approach,
it is taken with me looking out the top windows, with the ISS in the middle of the screen, and RPOP running in an External MFD. As you can see, I am in LVLH, as is the ISS, but RPOP has me coming in from off the side of the station. The numbers and data are all good, if not in the wrong place, as this is all part of the same problem with the axis being wrong, but CMG 2.0 does fix the jitterness of the ISS and thus the jitterness in the numbers in RPOP are gone too.

So like I said, RPOP is still very useful during an approach into ISS 3.2, the information is just jumbled, and I do not think it is RPOPs fault. The only cure would be to add the ability to re-assign the axis, and still get the overlays to show up, since at this time, only the standard XY display will show the overlays.

Also, the docking overlay and screen seemed to work correctly, showed me at the correct location.

I think that the axies are off because David has his ISS mesh rotated so that LVLH can be achieved with the stock Prograde attitude hold. Since he designed RPOP to work with his ISS (maybe not exclusively) the axies will be off when used with a different station. This doesn't make RPOP unusable but the two overlay patterns cannot be used as intended.
 
No, it certainly is not unusable, like I said, it offers some valuable information and use it all the time, it just is not as functional as it is when using it with ISS FLeet for the reasons you said.

Just have to know that the axis are different for trying to figure out the directions for x y and z, and the overlays are not usable, but once have a visual on the station, that is not such a big problem.

But with CMG2.0, instead of ISS 3.2s default CMG, the jittering is gone so the numbers refresh much smoother, where with the default one, the rate of change would jump every third refresh or so, making things a bit more difficult, but this is due to how that CMG worked.
