General Question How does Off-Plane Intercept work?

Hi Orbitnauts,
Please excuse me not knowing where this thread should go (this is my first post). If it's in the wrong place feel free to move it.

Anyway, I'd like to know how IMFD's Off-Plane Intercept works in terms of orbital mechanics. Although I can use the program, I find it hard to visualise how it works in an intuitive sense. I've checked GPIS and the manual on OrbiterWiki and found precious little. Any explanations would be appreciated.
