This isn't a question, more of an answer to share.
After trying to figure out for some time how to add post-commentary to a screen capture video of Orbiter (or anything) without re-encoding the video, I have worked out how. Personally I find commentating while flying difficult and I don't want to have to re-encode the video 1 or 2 times losing quality as a result.
All you need is the free software Avidemux.
For recording I would highly recommend Open Broadcaster.
The recording format should be MP4.
Audio encoding should be MP3. If AAC is selected the audio will need to be re-encoded later but this is not really a problem, except that it takes extra time. The video will not be re-encoded.
Extracting the audio:
-Open the video of the recording (File>Open)
-In the Audio Output dropdown, select Copy (If the recording has AAC audio select MP3 or PCM depending on preference. PCM files will be much larger)
-Save the audio (Audio>Save audio). Note you must put the file extension after the filename when saving. For Copy and MP3 this is .mp3 and for PCM it is .wav (E.g. audio.mp3 or audio.wav)
-Record the commentary using whatever sound software you want and save as an .mp3 or .wav (E.g. commentary.mp3 or commentary.wav). You will probably want to ensure only the mic is picked up and not the playback of the video you are watching as you speak.
Mixing the audio:
-You can now either mix the commentary and original audio using a sound editing program and save the file as your final audio. (E.g. finalaudio.mp3 or finalaudio.wav)
OR
-Use Avidemux to mix the 2 audio files by applying audio filters.
The first option is probably better and even a video editor like Windows Movie Maker can be used. Basically reduce the original audio volume enough so your voice can be heard.
Adding the audio to the original video
-In Avidemux, open the video of the original recording (File>Open)
-Now add the final audio track to the original video
-Go to Audio>Select track and with Track 1 ticked as enabled click Add audio track and choose the final audio file.
-Ensure the next dropdown is on Copy otherwise the audio will be unnessarily re-encoded again. Press OK.
-Video output - Copy
-Audio output - Copy
-Output format - MP4 Muxer (or FLV Muxer)
-Click the Save video icon
-Save the final video remembering to add the .mp4 file extension after the filename.
