Hello, I have a small laptop problem.

It's an old laptop still working like a breeze, with only 1 boot device, the cd/dvd (no boot usb support), that unfortunately now is broken - doesn't read anymore.

So for now I installed Plop boot manager (http://www.plop.at/en/home.html), that allows me to boot from the usb key to do hd images and other things.

Problem is, when hd is broken, it will be no more possible to install any OS, because of the missing boot device.

So, I bought a new hd, I connected it with a usb IDE adapter, cloned the old one on it.

Now the second partition contains the last backup image, and the first and active partition has the old xp partition useful ONLY as host for Plop boot manager.

In case of failure, I replace the hd, run Plop, then the boot key that will restore the last backup to the first partition, that will be re-written.

So I solved the main problem, but still I don't like the idea to keep on a spare hd an entire XP OS just to run Plop (but it's not a problem in anyway), most of all, in case of failed restore, or shut-down during the operation, PC will be lost.

Basically, I need to know if there is a way to install a clean XP OS (or even DOS 6.22(!!!), I would dare to say) on an hd from another pc connecting it with the usb IDE/SATA adapter (that I'm using to backup the image).
