Hi; it's been awhile for me and have a Q about installing the hi res files to Orbiter 2006 on my laptop - I'm talking the Earth & Moon & planet, etc hi-res upgrades (like Earth060504_L10.zip, etc).

I have downloaded a bunch of .ZIP files, but when I try to unzip them, it askes me where to unzip them to, and suggests an entirely new folder. People have said that maintaining directory structure is real important.

My problem - I had done this before (last year and I forgot the details) onto my Desktop, and it works fine, but there are no such new folders that those files were unzipped to. I've scoured the directories of the desktop machine and I can't seem to find out which are the newer upgraded hi res files or where they were put last time.... And yes, I did a search on here first before asking, but got too much non related stuff to sort thru.

Can anyone give directions on how, and where to install the hi res upgrades for Orbiter 2006?

(I just want the 2006 advice, I don't want to change to 2010 at this time)

Thanks, Dave

When you are being asked where to unpack it, simply select your orbiter directory.
Keep directory structure intact of course and let it overwrite all files.
This works for 99% of all addons for all versions of orbiter.

Happy Orbiting

It's advisable to unpack all addons to their individual temporary folder, inspect the contents, and slowly assemble them together.

This will allow you to familiarise you with Orbiter's directory structure (which is very straightforward) and also prevent the case of two differently packed ZIP files from being installed wrongly (as in the case of textures going into /Orbiter/Textures/Textures - one subfolder too much, which will assuredly not work and is difficult to track down).

Thank You both!

Now I've installed both the Hi Res and the Apollo NASSP add-ons.
Although I had to do a system restore after the Apollo upgrade, and
the program would crash when trying to run the Apollo one. I simply
re-installed the Apollo, and it then ran fine again.

I am amazed at how well both Orbiter and EL3D run on this laptop!
It is an unexpected bonus. Thank you both.

Indeed you can extract directly to your Orbiter directory. However, when I install a new addon I haven't used before, then I take Carmen's advice and extract it to a temporary folder so I can inspect all of the files before hand. Once I'm happy I simply move them to their respective directories in my Orbiter installation.

What? I've been moving the contents of Textures2 to Textures. >.>

So does Orbiter look for the highest-resolution planet textures, or look in Textures2 first?

It looks in Textures2 first.

One could add that from Martin Schweiger ( and maybe - but i think, also - from the Orbiter.pdf ):

"ORBITER first searches for the texture file in the location specified by the HightexDir entry in the Orbiter.cfg file. If the texture file is not found or if HightexDir is not defined then ORBITER searches in the directory specified by the TextureDir entry. This allows switching between high and low resolution texture maps conveniently by inserting or removing the HightexDir entry."
