So I just got started with Orbiter. Everything has been great so far except I've been a little disappointed with the planets' and moons' textures. So I download the whole suite of textures from here. I installed them by extracting the files into my Orbiter directory where most of them ended up the Textures2 folder.

However, they don't seem to be active in game, or at least they seem to of had very little effect. I was wondering if maybe I need to enable them somewhere? Or perhaps, because the Earth textures were L11-L14 maybe I'm missing some intermediate texture pack?

Any help is appreciated.

Side note: I noticed the moon from orbit seemed to be pretty high res, but I can't compare because I hadn't seen the moon prior to installing the textures. The textures on the surface of the moon (from the moon base) still look pretty bad though.

Even with the high rez textures, they don't look great close up - each pixel covers a few square meters of real estate.

Also, look around on the launchpad, somewhere there is a setting for "maximum texture level" or something like that - make sure it's turned up to 14.

In most cases, the extremely high textures are for smaller areas - not the whole planet. A good example is the hi rez area around KSC.

Thanks for the welcome.

You know, from a distance I think the textures on the Earth may have worked. I think it was the clouds that were throwing me off. The clouds are really low res and over an ocean in low orbit, where you can only see clouds and water, Earth looks identical to the default textures.

Still however, the textures on the ground and on the Moon and Mars look awful. It's almost one solid color. I'm surprised they can't use some kind of repeating texture near the ground. Level is set to 14, I checked.

I suppose I'm just too used to used to Microsoft Flight Simulator.

I also have a question regarding textures pertaining to the level of detail.

I have been trying to find the highest res textures so orbiter's planets can look as good as possible but I can't figure out how to tell which level textures I have installed. I installed the outerplanets hires pack but I can't figure out how to tell the level of them. Same goes for the various moon and inner planet/earth textures that are on OH. There are a ton of them and I can't figure out which ones would be an improvement over the stock textures that come with Orbiter.

Help is appreciated:hailprobe:
