Interplanetary mfd tangential transfer: "unable to create orbit for this mjd"

I'm using the latest version; 5.5

So anyway, the tangential transfer works fine; I can set target to moon, src to self, reference earth, hit autoburn and it takes me where I want to go. There's one very annoying problem though; it comes up every second or two with this "unable to create orbit from this mjd". Normally I'd just ignore it but it hides the graph, and all the data(distance, DV, etc.) and its quite a pain to plan something that would normally be simple.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I would greatly appreciate any help in ridding myself of this problem, and I couldn't find anything on google, so many future people will be able to find help from searching the error.

Tangential Transfer doesn't work well with lunar transfers. Since you need to have the source set to yourself, it needs to be able to anticipate you position accurately, and that's a lot of math when a body is in a low orbit / high velocity state. IMFD has to make it's calculations sort of "in the background" so it doesn't hog the processor and hang the sim up. Sometimes it just has a hard time keeping up when you are close to a gravity source.

Target Intercept will work better, and can utilize target offsetting and Map so that you have the smallest MCC's and approach burns.

Tangential Transfer can work alright for Interplanetary - but again, Target Intercept can be just as efficient - sometimes more efficient.

I tried using target intercept the other night; but the delta V was showing a very high value. I tried it again today; and it still showed a high value, but then it dawned on me; I hadn't aligned planes with the moon. After aligning planes; it showed what I expected; around 3k DV. I burned at the right time, and it brought me into a perfect position for orbit insert; all hassel free.

I thank you very much for your help; you gave a very detailed explanation of why it wasn't working, and of the limitations(and, indirectly, the uses) of the tangential transfer function.

Now I plan to travel to some of the closer jovian moons as practice before making a landing on triton; I thank you very much for making this possible; you are very kind.

I do agree - It's true that the transfer energy is usually less with Tangential than Target Intercept, but most of time the ship ends up pretty far from the planet, and sometimes even trailing. If this is the case, energy values to orbit insert can be really high, neutralizing the initial advantage.
