Is it worth getting a joystick for Orbiter? If so, suggestions of a relatively good but not mindblowingly expensive one?

1. is it worth getting a joystick for orbiter?

answer: in my opinion YES DEFINITLY GO BUY ONE RIGHT NOW HURRY GO TO THE STORE

2. suggestions:

answer: well I have a Saitek AV8OR-01, don't know if its the best for the money but it seems to be. I haven't tried any others though. I did however research web reviews before i got it. i think mine was 50-60 bucks when i got it. I like the toggles and the mode switch, its easy to program an you can switch between your "profiles" so on mine, for example, i have mode a for orbital maneuvers, mode b for docking procedures, small rcs work, etc... and mode c for vertical ascent control. another profile all is the same, but mode c is programed to control the x-r2 quickly for orbiter racing league, so i have gear up/down brakes, scram on/off open/close all really close at hand. hasn't glitched on me in anyway, seems to offer accurate and fine tuned control. maybe not the best out there, but its a nice size and works well

i use a Saitek X52 pro with rudder pedals, a setup most commonly known as "sheer overkill"

but it's really cool...

i didn't buy it just for orbiter tho... i use it for all sorts of gaming scenarios... but nowadays, mostly orbiter:hmm:

Yes, Yes, Yes, a joystick makes the orbiter experience even better. Ive been using Microsofts Precision Sidewinder 2 for many years without a problem.

I also recommend a joystick- it really changes the whole experience. I use a Saitek X-52, but if you are only flying orbiter, its probably overkill.

I've been playing orbiter for 2 years now and just recently managed to find my joystick and plug it into orbiter for the first time. It completely changed the experience. I have never EVER been able to do a standard runway landing before now. Of course learning to use it can cause it's own frustration. See my thread "venting". :)

Yes, any joystick helps. I have an ancient Sidewinder (like, the oldest possible Sidewinder), and it's the only reason I'm able to make good landings. It sucks terribly for anything but atmospheric flight, but just for that it is well worth it.

Moach, I am soooooooo envious of your joystick.

The Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X is a good multipurpose joystick. It works great with FSX, HAWX, etc. And if you get to program the keys to your needs, it also works great for orbiter. You can detach the throttle lever from the joystick.

The only drawback is, that the cable that connects the throttle to the stick is a little short. You can squeeze a keyboard in between. But that's it.

But it costs only 30 quid

I've got a Logitech Attack-3, which is a very cheap option, but it is reliable and works well for me. It also has a throttle control, which is a bonus.

I use a Saitek X52. DEFINITELY changes the experience of atmospheric flight. Wouldn't try a runway landing without it.

I also use a joystick for orbiter, but just for landing & takeoff of winged vehicles. For orbital operations I still use my numpad, it's much more accurate.

I use the Saitek X-52. I mostly use it for other flight sims, but it does make manoeuvring in space quite fun!

I want it...I also see you've programmed the throttle MFD to display some of Orbiter's vessel information, which is awesome! And with the release of G42 you'll probably sell it to everyone on the forum!

I have an X52, not pro, no pedals, but it's still awesome. Plus I use a Cherry POS keyboard for those extra keys. No labels made yet though, and I can't figure out how to make it not say "Key combination" when I use a software macro (hardware macro sometimes doesn't register in Orbiter, too fast).

Thanks for the replies all , I'll certainly look at investing in one soon

What he said, I've got the same setup :D
If you only use orbiter though it's massive overkill.

on my laptop, tho, i use a playstation-like gamepad... or am trying to...
the damn thing has its axes placed in a most unintuitive manner... having the stick on the left and rudder/throttle on the right... contrary to RC units

and having to hold the throttle thingy up all the time really gets old fast, so i'm cooking up a little module to allow for flexible configuration of one or multiple joysticks...

what i have so far works only at my home rig, so i can use the pedals for rudder and my 6DOF device for RCS.... right now, i'm working on making it flexible so that others can enjoy it as well

and plus... i have yet to take apart my old 4-axis joystick and have it integrated to my little sim-pit (chair with x52 bolted into) then i'm gonna have me a lot of buttons :P
i'll post pics in the simpit forum when i'm done with it.... may not be too soon, tho, considering how much free time i really have
