Hey all,

I just downloaded Orbiter, and discovered that the numeric keypad seems to be where all the main controls are. The problem is, I am on a laptop computer.

Is it possible to reassign keys, or is there an add-on for laptop users to change the default keys?

Yes it is just open Keymap.cgf and replace "Numpad Up" etc. to the key of your choice.

Most laptops have a section of the keyboard that will double as the number pad, usually if you hold Fn while you press them. Also, hitting Fn+NumLock will make those keys act as the number pad until you turn it off. At least that's how it was on my old laptops.

There are also external number pads, USB, wireless, what have you. Orbiter should be fine with either of those options. Hope this helps!

Hi! Yes, Orbiter can be used on a Laptop. Just use the built in Numpad. The only disadvantage is, for some animations (K for opening of the docking port or J for jettisoning of stages) you must turn of the numpad, then for the next stage you must turn on again to start or stop the engines or to maneuvre. Especialy in AMSO this is very dangerous http://orbiter-forum.com/forum/images/smilies/th_laugh.gif But all other is no problem. Happy flying!

I've never used Orbiter on anything other than my laptop. I really recommend picking up a USB number pad. One of these days, I'll actually try it with a joystick, too!

Ah! Thank-you all very much, both for the prompt replies and the wide diversity of solutions.

*goes to fire up Orbiter again...*

Orbiter laptop controls

Enable numlock, use + and - for accel and decel, NOT above the = key but the one next to left shift. And i believe pitch, roll, yaw, etc is u,i,o,j,k,8,l etc.

For accel(thrust) its better to press f1 and go into cockpit view and enable thrusters using the stick, otherwise you'll have to keep holding + (/?+) key.

Simple control - Holding NUMPAD+ engages maximum throttle. Releasing it disengages the throttle instantly.

Holding CTRL + NUMPAD+ smoothly increases the throttle, the modifier works with NUMPAD- too.

Holding NUMPAD+ and tapping control will lock full thrusters so you can let go of the keys.

For this reason I tend to use Fn + key instead of turning numlock on.

I just bought me one of those numpad USB devices, works like a charm.

Of course! I'm playing it on a Laptop and you can always
use the
BLue Fn Keys.

On my Laptop its Fn+F11 to Put up the Numpad with the keys

I just hit f4, go to custom, and use remote ship control on my own ship to do the docking and such when I need linear, otherwise i use a joystick.
