Advanced Question killing AutoFCS before the HAC

Is there anyway to disable Auto FCS before going into the TAEM and hac? it just seems to refuse to let me take over. Only way i know is to save exit sim and restart but that takes away some of the feeling of accomplishment when im on the runway.

[Ctrl+U] disables AFCS. The little window won't go away but you will have control of the Orbiter.

Actually, just "U" (without the CTRL) will also disable (or re-enable) AFCS.
