From what I know, there is no addon out there that includes LC-39B with the three lightning towers installed in 2009. I was wondering, is anyone up to making them?

Yes, it's a good idea! The lightning towers are beautiful, but are useless with the space shuttle launch pad, maybe in an addon featuring the SLS the Lightning towers could be added...

Well, it would be nice to see them in the background for re-creating the last few shuttle missions and for wanting to fly STS-400, as when 400 was at the pad LC-39B had lightning towers. Ares I-X also launched from the shuttle era LC-39B with those lightning towers and without the lightning tower on the FSS.

Maybe they could be made as a mesh that you add to your canaveral.cfg file like the stock LC-39B instead of remaking a new LC-39B.

Why not... Does someone knows their height, and the dimensions of their (triangular) base ?

Another pic with more details :

Height of each tower = 594 feet (from the contractor itself !) : http://www.iveysconstruction.com/CompletedProjects/032_ConstructLightningProtectionLC39B.asp

The lighting mast itself is 103 feet tall, for a diameter of 7 meters, made mainly of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic.

Been working on updated LC39A & B (Both versions) since Shuttle Fleet 4.8 was released.

That 3D view posted is a picture from Orbiter 0.o

I know it's off-topic, but do we have a "clean pad" addon for LC-39/LC-39B?

Sorry guys, but I think it allready exists something like this here --> [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3792"]LC39-EAFB 2006.3 - Hi-Res by Slat[/ame]

But they don't look quite like the ones you are showing on the pictures, so why not?

And T.Neo, I think it's possible with only deleting some lines in the Orbiter/Config/Earth/Base/Canaveral.cfg file...

I've had that addon. No, it does not have the LC-39B that is up to date, rather it has it as the twin pads as they where from 1986 - 2008, aka it does not have the three lightning towers around LC-39B that was installed in 2009 for the Ares I-X mission.

Made a try at it, using the right dimensions. Here's my attempt to reproduce the first level of the towers, it's a tradeoff between details and not too much polys (there are going to be 3 towers) :

I was thinking that scaling would be an easy method to complete the tower, but it appears that the proportions are not that linear, so it is more complex.

The same structure is repeated 24 times on the tower.

As I posted earlier, my brother-in-law (he did the hi-res version of LC19 for Gemini) & I have been redoing LC39A & both versions of LC39B since Shuttle Fleet 4.8 came out.

Concrete pad structures are done & new MLP is almost complete. Probably wont be any ground modeling as there was for pad 19 since pad 39 is fairly level, but detailed out-buildings & the lightning towers WILL be included.

Deciding how best to handle the animations as we begin the FSS & MSS.

Titan, that sounds really cool! :)

Any chance you could post pictures!??

Not much to see as yet. The detailing on the MLP is about half done (pipes/stringers/railings/etc). LOX & LH2 tanks done, but the piping for the pad isn't laid in yet.

Models will be high poly count as you can't show this level of detail with textures alone, but Saturn's pad 19 was based on the same principle and as far as we know, there were no issues with the poly count.

Pictures coming as soon as we can show the improved detail.

Done with the frame of the first level. The closer you look at it, the more you get admirative, a true wonder of structural engineering, interesting.

The proportions should be very close of the real thing.

Only 18 sub-levels to go.

The model is good with low-end computers?

No idea yet... Just completing the tower level by level... It is like building a castle of cards... We'll see what comes out of it. :P

First floor (Level A) frame completed :

Looks cool!

Here's an "in progress" shot of the new MLP. Hard to see the railings, but they are there. All detail is 3D.

Probably not quite 1/2 done, but once the decks & railings are complete (painstaking as I'm sure you know), the sides should'nt take that long.
