From memory, at a typical PDI starting point (18km altitude, 490 km from target) use pitch control to maintain a steady 28 m/s vertical speed. That should get you to the high-gate region pretty well, from where it's generally not too hard to eye-ball the landing.
And if you tune a NAV radio into the base frequency (use CTRL-I to find it) you can use the VOR/VTOL MFD to align your cross-range error by banking slightly during the braking phase.
