The molten carbon sits 217 miles beneath the surface of the Earth in the upper mantle and has no immediate pathway to the surface. In total the lake covers approximately 700,000 square miles, approximately the size of Mexico.

By the way it's not quite molten "carbon" - seems to be carbon-rich molten rock, maybe carbonates or something like that?

Really interesting paper - I don't understand most of the detail but there are a lot of interesting cross-sections and things in it...
