On May 3rd, 1987, Energia-Kvant was launched from Baikonur, carrying the new Mir module Kvant. Mir, at the time was designed to be a long-term orbital research laboratory, but it's purpose would be changed with the goal. The next module, was to be intended as the Kristall, for the Buran to dock with it. With a long-term lunar mission in mind, lunar crews would be launched on a Buran Shuttle-type to train for their upcoming mission.
Throughout the rest of the period, preparations would be done for upcoming missions. With a risk in mind, and the order from Reagon, STS-26 was to be prepared for launch by late 1987, to carry a new spy satellite intended to spy on Soviet preparations. STS-26, was to have Atlantis be designated for the flight.
Soviet officials, would green light Energia-Buran for October 19th, 1987 for an unmanned flight, with manned flight 1 for February 7th, 1988. The new Buran, was designed like the shuttle, but a better design.
(Now can anyone give me what they would call consecutive Buran missions and such.)
