Greetings Fellow Space Primates!

What the heck am I leaving out?

Delta glider from earth to moon. Set up my burn in transfer mfd. All looks good but when I hit the gas for TLI the dashed orbit from the HTO expands out into the cosmos instead of the actual orbit displaying in the transfer mfd. I've checked and can't find the step that I'm leaving out.

what the...?

Well, are you sure your orbit is expanding "into the cosmos" which implies it's beyond the moon? That you're in a hyperbolic orbit?

To get to the moon, you can do so by leaving earth at near escape velocity, but not quite. You would have a very high apogee, just over 400,000 km. Orbit is still clearly elliptical. (So if you miss the moon, you can still come back home.)

Next time you do this, check your apogee altitude, and see what you've got. Use the Orbit MFD.

Yeah, I've experienced what your saying.
Basically, what hes saying (to anyone who doesn't get it), is that when he does his TLI Burn, the values on the TransferMFD change instead of just burning.

I dont know how i fixed it, but it doesn't happen to me anymore.

I haven't used transfer MFD in a looooong time. Once you get the hang of it, TransX can handle a lunar transfer just fine, and is in fact easier than transfer.

I think it's normal, but it's not a problem.

The problem seems to be that you burn too much.
The dashed orbit from the HTO has to "hit" the yellow circle wich is the Moon's orbit. When it do this, or a little before, you have to stop your engines. So your orbit "touch" the Moon's orbit and you can go to the Moon.
If you go on burning you certainly will go "into the cosmos". :)

Kaito is correct. I didn't explain my problem very well. With the HTO I've set up my hypothetical orbit. When I actually burn prograde my actual orbit (supposed to be solid green) does not show on the mfd. It is supposed to slowly grow from the center and expand out to match my planned trajectory. Instead when I hit the gas the hypothetical orbit that I just set up expands out further into space. No actual trajectory shows up on the mfd. I thought maybe I had somehow forgotten a step. I tried turning off the HTO but that leaves me with no info on when to start my burn or when to end it.

Found a work around. I set the right MFD as a second Transfer MFD. I was able to monitor the burn on that one which seemed to work fine.

As a correction, a graph of my burn did show up on the original transfer MFD but only after blowing the HTO graph hell and gone into the void.

A strange side note is that the time to initiate burn was not the same on both transfer MFDs. Not off by much but still off. Go figure.

Before attempting a transfer, you might need to know this

It is easier to transfer using Interplanetary MFD.
