moon landing skepticism (ASMO)

ive mentioned this in another thread but i have a friend who actualy believes that space travel is not real!!!!! ie, he does not believe that an orbit can be established. it just beggers belief. i have tried to talk him round several times but he is adament that he is right so wont listen.:chair:

Did you try telling him about Newton's Cannon thought experiment?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_cannonball

BTW, didn't he ever study Physics in high school? Also you should say that if what he said is true, the Moon should have fallen to Earth a long time ago and the Earth should have fallen into the Sun.

i told him about the hypothetical cannon on a large mountain above the atmosphere, also i did say that the moon is in an orbit around the earth. the problem is that he didnt think it was the same thing ie a moon in the sky above a planet and a man in a rocket in orbit. he does philosophy so i guess thats one of the clauses of the course is neather to understand nor want to attempt to comprehend basic physics!!

Well .. maybe someone should knock him out :chair: , put him on sedatives, and sneak him aboard STS-124 . ( HAHAHAHAHA <maniacal laughter continues ..>) We can also throw in one of the flat earth society guys for a bonus. By the time they wake up, they should be in orbit. LOL !! :lolol: . That would teach 'em.
mwahaha.gif
.

Man .. we really need a maniacal laughter emoticon.

My other violent ideas include strapping Bart Sibrel to an Inertial upperstage, point it towards an Apollo site and fire it off !! :lolol: Too bad it would destroy any relics ..

MUHAHAHAHAHA. < more maniacal laughter >

People out there think the space shuttle project is faked. They believe it is impossible for a space craft to recover from the heat of reentry and that NASA lacks the funding to do so.

Now thats a new one for me .. Oh well I guess there are all kinds of idiots in this world.

LOL. I have lecture notes comparing Shuttle and Mercury regarding their reentry behavior and these notes explain VERY well why the shuttle does not melt at all.

BTW: The lecture was held by the former German astronaut Ulrich Walter, who flew with the Shuttle. I saw TV coverage from his flight STS-55 in German TV last night... including a guided tour through the shuttle.

Just ask him, what he thinks, what keeps the moon in place? If he says, Earths gravity, ask him, why the same gravity can't keep a spacecraft in place?

I fail to see how anyone can do philosophy if they cannot understand even the very basic stuff about how the world works.

its so great finding one website in the the big wide WWW where u can say Apollo was real without fifty people saying it wasn't
BTW if u strapped a hoax accuser to a shuttle he would just say it was fake somehow these people must have tough lives questioning wether that plane smoke trail going overhead is real or just another set by the government to prove this or that is possible.

He could answer that those are different things - Moon is so heavy and spacecrafts are light - obviously, they can't do the same thing. :)

Also I remember reading about a person with similar beliefs. He thought that spaceflight is fictional. Reason? Cause it is technically impossible to break the sound barrier. Of course, hypersonic planes are plain lies - Atlantic Ocean is just much smaller than it is on maps. And all the satellites are light recon aircraft, that are fueled in air from time to time.

"If we went to the moon, then how come I can't see the spaceship with my telescope?" A kid on my bus actually said this to me:suicide:

And I had so much hope in humanity .. :sorry::thumbsdown::chair:

I guess the only hope is this --> :hunter:

Oh .. that guy should try explaining the "crack" of a whip .. and get some whippings in the meantime..

Well, the point was that it is technically impossible to break the sound barrier, not that it broke some physical laws. I mean, you can't fly on a whip's end.

Anyway, those are rare beliefs. I have never meet a person who thought so.
Yet, MoonHoax is much more popular. I guess much of it appeal (at least where I live :) is that is not *politicaly neutral*. :)
Another reason, is that LunarLanding is indeed very fantastic. It's hard to believ that dreams come true. Especially if there is no wonderland after fulfilling that long humanity's dream. :)

This geek you describe is either pulling your leg or is a plain and simple jerk whose company you should avoid, lest he infect you also with his stupidity.

Ask him what he thinks about naturalism. ;)

Oh, must have missed it.

"If we went to the moon, then how come I can't see the spaceship with my telescope?" A kid on my bus actually said this to me:suicide:

Actually, people saw the spacecraft with a telescope, while it was on it's way.

Also, passengers on a plane observed Apollo 8s reentry...

Of course, it is now away, the missions happened 40 years ago.

You can ask him why he can't see a coin held by a guy on top of the empire state building using a telescope .. from the ground .

Of course, why use a telescope when you can see it with your own eyes? Like in the case of ISS. Point him to heavens-above.com.
