I like the Arrow Freighter that features in UCGO. I guess it's one of Dan's?

Usually I'm not so keen on science fiction stuff, but the DGIV has been a very useful Orbiter training craft and the Arrow freighter has some really cool features. The "bridge" of this vessel, with its ambient sounds and ghostly lighting effects really instills an atmosphere of the loneliness of deep solar system exploration.Burning the main engines has an eerily audible rumble, that seems to come deep from within the ship. Whoever has added these small details has done an excellent job of conveying the feeling of such a large space craft. It reminds me of ship in 2010: Space Odyssey.

And yet, the "bridge" seems singularly lacking in controls for such a large and complex ship. It would be nice to have a few more systems modelled, at least to Dan's DGIV level. For example, I miss the long range antenna. Also, I wonder if it's possible to have more than two MFDs? A ship this size should have a whole bank of MFDs!

Finally, few more positions on the bridge one can CTRL-click through. Would be nice to have an "observation" area, for example.

My 2c :-)

Try here. There is "observatiion area" Ctrl + up i believe. For me, arrow is a freighter not a sciencie vessel. And as such, i feel its complete as it is.

I have to agree. IMHO, the arrow is just fine as it is, except for a certain lack of re-paints, but that's only a minor problem. It was one of the first craft I decided to take Orbiter a little more seriously with, thus, I have a slight preference to it. I enjoy using it and I feel all the controls are just fine as they are. Though, I feel like a couple more MFD's couldn't hurt. It would save me some time on those lunar transfers/ Inter-planetary flights.

A "science vessel" would contain scientific instruments for taking scientific measurements, which is NOT what I am requesting. Just the stuff what's in Delta Gilder would do, like the computer etc.

Of course I could always add more MFDs - but it would be nice to be able to see more than two at a time.

I tried all the CTRL + arrow key possibilities and none took me to an observation deck...

In a DGIV you are a pilot operating radios, switching doohickeys and splicing the mainsails.

On the Arrow you are more like a captain or the commander of the mothership. You have engineers sorting out the technical stuff. I think Dan got the "atmosphere" on the bridge spot on.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that the Arrow was but a proof of concept ship, a "simple" craft intended to show what could be done with the UCGO tech. The fact that it is so feature rich as is is a testament to the skill and dedication of the creators.

That said, I wouldn't mind some animated hatches for the landing gear...

The Arrow was the first ship that looked so cool that it convinced me to try my best to do my first inter-planetary flight, and it was to Jupiter, lol. I had no knowledge of TransX or anything like that, but I loved the ship so much so I learned TransX and did my first succesful Deep space mission. One thing that attracted me to the ship was because it reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Discovery from the movie.

( Screen from the actual flight, Retrograding for Orbit insertion )

I loved the lonely feeling conveyed in the movie when Discovery is on cruising course to Jupiter. And I also think Dan achieved that quite much with Arrow, sure the VC could need some more MFD's and interactivity being so big, but for now it works. If you read the "Help" pages while in Arrow, Dan points out that he has stopped working on DG-veichles and is going to work on the Arrow in the coming years! He will probably add even more content to the ship then.

But for now, we can only wait for further development. The ship is amazing already and I can't imagine how it will be in the future. But in the meantime I will do Deepspace missions around our Solar System, while listening to 2001: A Space Odyssey's soundtrack, love the feeling. ;)

But yeah, Dan writes he will keep developing the Arrow and I think that is his main focus now, though I may be wrong.

You actually go to the window right infront of the standard VC-view. You do it by pressing Ctrl-alt + up. To go back you just press Ctrl-alt + down.

Haha, I also need to add that it is really fun to see other people from Sweden on the Forum! :)

Me too! I've just loaded up the DGIV in the docking bay and will use it as a landing craft, keeping the Arrow in orbit.

I couldn't agree more. And there is this feeling that the ship kind of takes care of itself with minimum input.

No I hadn't read that bit & I'm gald to hear it.

Indeed. The sense of immersion in this ship is like no other.
