Gaming NASA Creating MMO Video Game

Seattle just had one of our coldest/snowy winters. I wish this global warming stuff would hurry up.

"I had that utterly disappointed feeling.
Now even NASA is peddling underpowered electric cars."

If you watch NASA TV much, the warming propaganda is thick and non-stop. NASA was taken to task by the congress for not promoting the garbage enough. No problem now with teachers adding this indoctrination tool to young impressionable kids to whom the sky is falling is an easy kill message.

Because "Global warming" means that the temperatures everywhere will be going up, right? Wrong. That's not what it means. And this isn't the thread for that, anyway.

Unfortunately we don't get NASA TV here in SA.

No wonder NASA has so much time making a successful manned spaceflight program, they're too busy with this. :P

Hey, it only a theory.

While I have no high hopes for this in terms of 'competing' with Orbiter, it is very cool that NASA is attempting to reach out and educate our youth.

We really need something to get students interested in math and physics... and spaceflight!

Yeah, I can't really see this taking off like the Army game without it being more thrilling than plotting a trajectory or wandering around a Martian wasteland collecting rocks. There will need to be some form of competition, either with the environment (figuring out the cheapest/quickest transit, what consumables can you skimp on without harming your crew) or with other players (getting somewhere first, and fighting for it).
It won't matter how cool the graphics are or how realistic if it can't hold the average person's attention.
But unlike other space-themed MMOs such as EVE Online or Star Trek Online, such ships probably won't be toting laser weaponry.

Hehe, but I bet it won't be long before someone hacks the skin file on their ship to paint a jolly rodger on it, and figures out how to match orbit/trajectory and then extorts money or items from them to avoid getting rammed ("boarded") ARRRRRRG!!!

Funny, I didn't think is was International Talk Like a Pirate Day already...

After they release this, how long do you think it's going to be before we get all those Halo 3 type n00bs playing?

Looks like someone has gotten owned at Halo 3.

If it's FTP, you can guarantee there'll be all kinds of idiots playing. Free to play games are like magnets for idiots.

Orbiter is free, yet there is not too many idiots around here, are there? (unless I am one, so I just don't notice :P)

Orbiter requires you to unzip files. That alone keeps at least 50% away :P

Since we already established that the youth doesn't care about space flight, I thought I'd better go with 50%...

Give me 5000 ¤ or I will kill you with an ASAT.
