NASSP Troubles

I recently pelted down a copy of the beautiful NASSP Apollo addon.
There are a few blocks in the road during flight, and the included documents do not provide solutions / procedures.

1/ I can understand why the TLI starts early when controlled by the flight computer, but it starts too early almost every time, which deters my flight trajectory. I usually end up farther from the moon than I want to be, which results in having to use more fuel for LOI, taking usually about 60-70% of the CSM/LM's fuel. (this is even with the scenario provided, "ready for TLI" and the one right after cutoff with suggested input)

2/ Once in lunar orbit, and I undock the LM, RCS starts up fine, I hit all the switches I need to power up engines, yet the main engine shows no sign of function. i've ran through the checklist a few times, just to be sure I hit everything I needed to.

3/ The provided lunar decent program, Verb 37 Noun 63 responds with a Verb 06 Noun 89, which under the list of verbs and nouns, is undefined in any of the documentation. The display(P63, V06, N89) feeds back two values when program 63 is run in the provided Apollo 11 checkpoint, "ready for lunar decent."

A label of the values, or a rundown of the decent process would be much appreciated.
 
It sounds like the old 6.4.3 from the scenarios he mentioned and the fact that he found and flipped the LM switches. ;)
EliNaut, are you trying to use the main engine button or the hover engine button for the LM? The LM uses the hover engine. (0 and . keys)
Also, what is the Delta-V you are using during TLI?
Lastly, please use Mid-Course Corrections. When you are in between the Earth and the moon, a few m/s of DV can do MUCH more than while close to one of the bodies.

This would be 6.4.3 ;)

And I didnt know LM used hovers, i'll double check that!

For DV, I put in whatevers neccessary... usually ends up being around
3180 - 3190 range.

Course corrections are a good idea, I've done interplanetary voyages
with the DGIV and its practically a must.
I'm just using the suggested Transfer MFD, mainly because its the only one I have which shows the Time to Burn in seconds, unlike TransX which is in MJD... I dont know if there was a toggle I missed, and I wouldnt know the conversion metheod. I'll give it a go tonight.

Well, that makes it simple:

@1: Yes, the TLI program of the "Simple AGC" as we call it can only do prograde burns leading to the problems you described. I suggest to use IMFD.

@2: Probably the hover thrusters as Quick_Nick explains.

@3: There's no P63 in the 6.4.3 "Simple AGC" version, it's funny that the AGC is reacting at all...

Hm... I got the program from the "Flying a Saturn V" document, twoards the end where it gives a reference to each of the possible displays on the computer.

This was copied and pasted right from the document:

I personally wouldnt be able to survive without IMFD. I think I tried it once before, but I think for some reason, it cut the burn way short.... Well, I didnt know much about the control surfaces then, so I think I might of hit "XLUNAR INJECT" to start the burn in my confusion. I now know where the manual engine thrust control toggle is :dry:

Yes, that can be a problem especially with older IMFD versions when using the autoburn feature. A really good TLI in an easy way (i.e. not manually flown) isn't possible with 6.4.3, only with the NASSP 7 Beta together with IMFD 5, more details are here: http://www.ibiblio.org/mscorbit/mscforum/index.php?topic=1431.msg14922#msg14922

By the way Tschachim,
I am actually on NASSP 6.4.0

I've attempted downloading the 4.3 patch but for whatever reason, the San Jose mirror starts to download then just stops after 1%, not even the coutdown moving, and the NY, NY mirror downloads fully but my comp says its corrupt, and that theres nothing in it when I go to extract it.

Whats up with that? :blink:
 
Please try again and try a different mirror if necessary, the SourceForge guys are working on the file release system, looks like this causes some problems, sorry.

Actually, TransX does have time to burn in seconds. I find TransX much more useful than TransferMFD myself. ;)
This tutorial, the 3rd most-downloaded addon on OrbitHangar, shows you how to use TransX to do an entire Apollo 11 flight from start to finish.

I figured everything out ;)
I just never knew how to use TransX really.

Also I finally landed on the moon.
Wrote up a tutorial for doing in manually in the tutorial section.
I plan to dig up my c++ reference books and see if I can mayby write up an autopilot for my method.

Many of the auto-landing MFDs make you select a base, but I'm confident with my idea that allows you to land wherever, for the most part. Besides, I fly an N1 simulation, and I dont think Brighton Beach was around in 1960 :P. It also could be helpful for base-less moons, of course.
