New Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON)

1,000,000 km/h relative to sun, just now

It should reach 1.5 per mille of the speed of light by the perihelion passage...

Also, I rather wait for those points of view of the perihelion passage...

Isn't it interesting how everyone intuitively started to call this comet ISON? Could someone predict that? (I personally hate to name it ISON. It's C/2012 S1! :) I don't like when words or abbreviations for something get more meanings when they don't have to.)

Too bad I am in Czech Republic. Here is the comet above the horizon right before morning when is everyone still sleeping. In addition it's cloudy.

It's a human thing, and it's why we name planets, stars, nebulae, and so on. It's a sort of personification.

I think I can now say it: "It's dead, Jim." :(

Latest image says ISON might be either breaking apart or going behind the sun.

Nope, too early to tell for sure. We'll know for sure a few hours after perihelion.

Looking at the latest pictures, I'm going to say ISON broke apart.

I'd be very surprised if otherwise.

I'm almost certain that we've just seen it break up, note the streak and then the dimming.

That may be so, but I'm going to reserve judgement until we hear something more certain.

ISON was kinda a pathetic comet to begin with, so this is a fitting end if so.

Too bad; after seeing Haley and Halle-bob I was hoping for another good comet.......just have to wait for the next one :(

FWIW, I've never seen a decent comet before. The good ones in my recent memory, such as Lovejoy and McNaught, were in the southern hemisphere. PANSTARRS wasn't very impressive, and ISON even less so.

Correction: The 1997 comet was named Comet Hale-Bopp.
