Vessel New Glenn addon inspired by BrianJ's Falcon 9

Thanks. Yes I am looking at the 2nd stage.

Maybe easier for me to do the MS2015 part. At least get it into space. It will not be reusable:(

I got her to launch in ms2015 not sure on the masses

Needs longer engine plumes.

On the masses, I'd say the liftoff mass is 6/7 (~85.7%) of the thrust. My rationale, not based on anything: it can still leave the pad if it loses an engine.
The first flight probably had the engines at ~90%, thus the slow liftoff.

Thanks. I guess I need a pad structure at LC 36.

With attachment manger off it just sits there. not lifting up.

So maybe the mass/thrust is wrong?

I may need to redo the Orbiterreef connector unit. Maybe a longer fairing to get the white end of the connector. And relook at how the solar arrays fold

So from the spec I set the thrust. But the Masses? It just sits on the ground
[STAGE_1]
Height=53.6
Diameter=7
EmptyMass=22200
FuelMass=401500
Thrust=1.71e4
BurnTime=3060.7
off=(0.000,0.000,4.700)

I tried to load a base mesh from an old addon. May need to flatten the area? And update for Blue Origin,
But here is a test of the new Glenn. Hopefully someone can figure why no lift off.

Not sure it is:

Height=53.6
Diameter=7
EmptyMass=22200
FuelMass=401500
Thrust=1.71e4
BurnTime=3060.7

Burn time 51 minutes???? Stage 1 should be 190s.
What units is the Thrust parameter, Newtons? Blue Origin lists the BE-4 at 2450kN thrust, so 7 BE-4s are 17150000N. Isp is 340s, so math* will give the propellant mass for stage 1. Same exercise for stage 2 with its parameters.

Dry mass... I'd subtract the prop masses calculated above from an estimated full mass of 6/7 of the thrust (see my previous post). Then put a higher percentage of that dry mass on the first stage, due to size (duh!) and the landing hardware. Not perfect, but probably valid enough.... 🤷‍♂️

*) explained in the Orbiter Developer Manual

Thanks. So prop mass is thrust/ (g0*isp).
Prop mass =5147.0588.

Hi,
not much (any) info around for New Glenn......
Here's my two-cents worth based on some dodgy assumptions....

Assuming dry stage mass is ~proportional to stage surface area, and comparing to Falcon9 then:

1st stage dry mass = 55000kg
2nd stage dry mass = 10000kg
Fairing mass = 2500kg each (x2) = 5000kg

Looking at the launch video, New Glenn reaches 60mph in 20s
That's an acceleration of 1.33 m/s^2
So total acceleration due to thrusters is 1.33 + g = 1.33 + 9.81 = 11.14m/s^2
Total sea level thrust is 17150000N
So by m = F/a
Total Mass = 17150000/11.14 = 1539497.307kg
Lets call it 1540000kg.
So total fuel mass = 1540000 - (55000 + 10000 + 5000) = 1470000kg

If you split the fuel (5/6 for booster) + (1/6 for upper stage) then:
1st stage fuel mass = 1225000kg
2nd stage fuel mass = 245000kg

I'm going to assume vacuum ISP and thrust ratings (I don't think MS2015 does variable ISP?) from here, so:
1st stage total thrust = 18991000N
1st stage ISP = 3394Ns/kg
Burn time = 1225000 x 3394 / 18991000 = 219s

2nd stage total thrust = 1540000N

2nd stage ISP = 4365Ns/kg
Burn time = 245000 x 4365 / 1540000 = 694s

Burn times look roughly right compared to BO launch time line:
Booster 190s + Reentry burn + Landing burn
Upper stage 654s + some margin?

The booster will be slightly overpowered initially. You could either implement a 90%-100% throttle over the total burn time and reduce burn time by 5%. Or take an average of Sea Level and Vacuum Thrust and ISP ratings.

Good luck!
Brian

Thanks. So she lifts off
using this:
[STAGE_1]
Height=53.6
Diameter=7
EmptyMass=55000
FuelMass=401500
Thrust=18991000
BurnTime=219
off=(0.000,0.000,4.700)
Linear_isp=3394
MeshName=NEWGLENN\NEWGLENN1STAGE

And I found this:
Linear_isp=xxx [sec] Useful for users willing to have a customized isp for linear thrusters as well, in order not to alterate the total dV of a stage. Note: this parameter is not present in the DMD, but only in the ini file

I'm not sure if New Glenn has Linear RCS, but if it does that might be useful?

I seem to remember that you're doing well if you have a stage mass to fuel mass ratio better than 1:9, so maybe the stages need to be heavier....
Code:
[STAGE_1]
    EmptyMass=100000
    FuelMass=1180000
    Thrust=18991000
    BurnTime=211

[STAGE_2]
    EmptyMass=20000
    FuelMass=2350000
    Thrust=1540000
    BurnTime=666
You get a tighter fit to the launch time line numbers too....
:unsure:

Using this: The rocket ignites but it just sits on the pad.

[STAGE_1]
Height=53.6
Diameter=7
EmptyMass=100000
FuelMass=1180000
Thrust=18991000
BurnTime=211
off=(0.000,0.000,4.700)
Linear_isp=3394
MeshName=NEWGLENN\NEWGLENN1STAGE
and
[STAGE_2]
MeshName=NEWGLENN\NEWGLENN_STG2
Diameter=5.000
Height=13.700
EmptyMass=20000
FuelMass=2350000
Thrust=1540000
BurnTime=666
Linear_isp=4365

on the Linear_ISP. I didn't see any other mention of ISP in the ms2015 doc

I may need to make a new texture for exhaust?

I got an extra 0 on the Stage_2 fuelmass!

Use this
FuelMass=235000
