New Logitech Joystick (G940)

I have an old CH FlightStick and Rudder Pedals which uses a serial port, bought before USB ports. The pedals are very sturdy and I hope I can use them again some day. My desktop PC still has a serial port, so they are hooked up, but I do all my computer stuff on my laptop these days, so I got a Logitech Wingman Extreme 3D with a twist rudder. Maybe I should see if I can get rid of the CH pedals on craigslist...

Do you mean gameport, not serial port?

IIRC, the Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS stick has a gameport in, specifically intended to allow pedals to be plugged into it.

I also currently use the Wingman Extreme 3D currently as the stick, with the throttle from a Saitek X45. The twist rudder on the Wingman is far better than the little throttle rudder lever on the Saitek, so I just combine the two for the best of both worlds.

I will wait. Once I bought a Saitek Cyborg 3D which was amazingly cool and good looking, but near the center it had virtually no sensibility. So I felt it like the old Atari joystick as motion started suddenly. So as you may see it was not so cool. What a shame. asa piece of art it looked very hi-tech.

I bought Microsoft Sidewinder which is not so good looking but it has worked fine.

No, I believe it's a serial port. This is basically 1992 tech. The rudder pedals come with a male and female plug, and the joystick plugs into either the computer directly or into the rudder pedals, whch in turn plug into the computer. My old DOS machine has a SoundBlaster card with a port for a joystick which I used, and I think my 2003 XP machine does, too.

The only reason I don't want to get rid of the pedals is because they work so well and are made of very tough, sturdy plastic. The FlightStick was good in its day, but they do wear out over time. The pedals seem to last forever.

If it's on a soundcard, I'd bet it's a gameport: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_port

If so, then the the Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS will probably let you plug it in directly, and they're USB themselves. Could save you some money over buying new pedals, and the Cougar is widely considered to be a very elite stick, not in the least due to the metal construction.

I also have an ancient Microsoft Sidewinder 1. It has 2 buttons and 2 axis, but it is the smoothest stick I have ever owned aside from the X52Pro.

Well, I don't think I'll be shipping it to the UK. And besides, if I can make it work with modern USB machines, I plan to keep them.

MSFS is not the only flight simulator currently on the market, and FSX is still being sold.

And I managed to pick up a copy of FS 2004 over the weekend as well as a Logitec Attack 3 joystick, total cost: AU$70.

Nope, I don't believe Thrustmaster or CH Products (got these mixed up at first ) made any fs yokes with serial inputs (very few companies did and they were mostly failures).

You do realize game-port and serial port use the same DA-15 connector, but are not compatible?

Many have mistaken this after so many years, but it is usually a safe bet that if it looks like a serial connector, it is a game-port connector.

However, you can probably get them to work still with the help of f.e. http://www.warrenernst.com/thrustmaster (see especially first link "required hardware").

Also note, that Vista will be troublesome to get it to work properly, XP (except 64bit) less so.

Hmm... Maybe I should see if I could still get my oooold ch-products stuff working...
