News New Movie: Europa Report

Europa Report looks like it could be a realistic rendition of a manned voyage to Europa (one of my favorite moons, btw).

Could be interesting, but I hate the entire found footage style and, frankly, the CG looks like Voyage to the Planets vintage. Ugh.

Well, it's obviously to cover the fact that they have virtually no content that's even trailer-ready at this point.

Strangely nobody has any issue swallowing the unobtainium in Star Trek or Star Wars, but if a movie that attempts to be semi-realistic has even one slip-up, it generally gets eviscerated by enthusiasts like us.

I suppose most fans of science fantasy don't care about those things (it's not really the point of the genre, after all), and anyone like us knows it's pointless to try thinking about it too hard. :lol:

This movie looks a little interesting. You're right on the point of the CGI, but maybe it'll be refined in time. In any case, it's not too bad - it could always just be props hanging from wire in a dark room.

Nah I think what happens is that unrealistic SciFi gets so far fetched it can just be ignored. Its basically fantasy. No one ever says "that's not the esoteric chant that conjures a fire based magic missile" because there is no reality to compare it to. Once scifi inches across the fine line of plausibility, it presents itself for scrutiny. Making a claim of partial or projected truth, the audience begins to dissect and categorize plot elements as fact and fiction.

You might get some complaints from anyone sitting behind you. When they ask everyone to turn off cell phones, they probably aren't considering that someone might bring a whole laptop.

Somewhat related, my local theatre also firmly states "NO TAXIDERMY" before each show. I keep expecting Chuck Testa to come tell us that the feature presentation was a fake.

The only similarity in the CG is that it's in the style of fixed cameras attached to a spacecraft with a spinning centrifuge. The CG model is totally different from the Pegasus in Voyage to the Planets.

Eh, nowhere near realistic though.

Elysium has a torus habitat. Perhaps it isn't a very realistic torus habitat, but when last did we see one of those in a live-action film?
