I've been poking around for a couple of weeks now. I thought now would be an opportune moment to formally introduce myself. My name is James Whittamore and I live in Sacramento, CA. I'm originally from L.A. but at 25 I fled my homeland to escape pollution and the perverse rudeness permeating the basin. I worked for a major financial institution in Pasadena that I grew to loathe and I lived on a 40 ft ketch in LongBeach. I slept through OJ, earthquakes, and riots while in my boat... But I still had to face the city on my daily journey to work. If I had stayed on I'd no doubt be someone important to the bank, but I wasn't happy.
I quit my job and moved here and went back to school. While at the bank I had participated with the IT guys to implement some software changes. I started studying computer science at a local junior college. It was a year before I heard about linux. For a class in c programming we had to log onto a linux server and compile our code. Thats when I learned of the x window system. I went to a Library and checked out a book on Redhat 6 that had the install disks because I was stuck on dialup. Redhat 9 had just been released. I remember how hard it was to get everything working on the laptop I had at the time and how much i enjoyed it. Now linux is a breeze and its gaining in popularity. There is usually an opensource app that does everything you need without ripping someone off and programmers work hard for little or no pay because they love their craft among other reasons. Orbiter to me seems to embody that same spirit.
Celestia led me to orbiter. I had decided to finally get into graphics and I was scouring the web for models and meshes so I can start making models for the Compiz cubemodel plugin which is currently in development.
In conclusion I wanted to be an astronaut at 5. My mom has stashed away a poster size crayola drawing of a Saturn V. I'm not playing with crayons anymore mom.

:welcome: to Orbiter-Forum, jimblah! Here's to clear skies for launches, and calm seas for splashdowns!

Welcome to Orbiter and the Community!

Linux is a fun OS for those of us whom like playing with code. I wish I had the experience with it as you seem to have had.

If you are looking for graphics, the NASA website has some 3d models you might be interested in.

Please be sure to visit the Tutorial Link at the top of the page. There are several great tutorials.

Happy Orbiting! :)

I'm in the same boat - I use Linux to do actual work, and windows to play orbiter. Luckily, with windows 7, rebooting isn't as much of a chore as it used to be.

Yep, Orbiter makes us justify the craziest things. I use my MacBook Pro to run Windows (with Boot Camp), only to run Orbiter.

Welcome to the community!
