I don't know if this is old news, but recent updates have put a "Silent Mode" toggle on the tray icon. Might have been there some time, I've only just noticed it.
It does seem to quiten Norton down a lot, the disk activity is much reduced.

Worth a try if you use Norton.

I tried a Norton anti-virus product twice in my life, both times with desastrous results. First time was back in good ol' DOS-times, where upon checking for viruses my system files had vanished (they're hidden, memory resident and secured, so they have to be viruses, right?), the other time in W2k, where upon installing norton I couldn't access the web anymore (even with deactivated firewall...). I'm rather ok with avira. :P

Yes, Norton/symantec is an aquired? taste. I use it through habit, and because I've paid for it, (I think its called inertia). My PC geek friends laugh at me, but i'm used to it.

About six months ago, my dad installed Norton on our 7-ish year old desktop at home. The performance of our dial-up was cut beyond the bearable limit. I pretty much stopped using the internet on that computer. I found the sporadic and unreliable wireless connection that I could get on my mom’s laptop much easier to work with (sporatic and unreliable being understatements).

Also, he installed it on a nearly full drive, making everything slow.

I stopped using NORTON when it started saying that ANYTHING that touched the registry in XP was a virus, thus deleting the copy of spore and Sim city 3000 that I had at the time.

I've grown used to Norton myself - I use Internet Security 2009 on two of my home computers.

Still... I'm beginning to think that it's Norton that's messing up my ability to share files and printers over my network...since it started happening before I changed my router. :(

Very likely its Norton, I have an XP and Vista and they don't talk to each other unless I switch off the Norton firewalls. Luckily I confuse them by burning DVD's and by-passing the network.
Is there no end to my versatilty?...

I use Norton 2009, and I've never had any problems with it.

I like the fact that it only conducts system scans, etc. in "idle time" (i.e. when your computer is on, but has not been used for more than ~15 mins).

I stopped using Norton in 07 when it broke a lot of clients laptops. It turned itself into a spam filter and updated a bunch of programs to use 127.0.0.1 as a mail server. absolute pain

I transfer files on USB flash-memory sticks myself. :P But it's rather hard to share printers that way...

Maybe I'll go back to ZoneAlarm for my firewall, and just keep Norton for my virus-scanner...

I have Zone Alarm on an old laptop, and occasionally it will get into the Vista box, but only the Public directory, and its one-way only...

Can't wait till I get W7 and totally confuse myself.

My organisation has pretty strict rules about which firewalls and AntiVirus programs are accepted when you want to access their internal mailing system from your computer. ZoneAlarm was on the recommended list but was removed about a year ago. Looks like it's not quite up to the standard anymore. They recommend "online armor" instead now (yeah, it's a silly name, but it seems to do the job and I never had problems with it...)

Yeah that's the story of my norton use.

Turns out that one of the latest upgrades of NIS *does* let my file/printer sharing work. (Go figure...)

As to Windoze... I'm still using XP Pro on my machines. (Well... the notebook I bought to use at launchsites came with Vista Business, but the machines I put together myself are still running XP.)

I *may* do an upgrade to Win7, once it's been out for a year or so.

I'm in a dillema at the moment, I gave an older machine, with the XP disc to a cousin, and have a modern? machine (3.2GHz, dual core) without an operating system.
My main machine is a quad core, 2.8GHz with a DX10 capable graphic card, running Vista Ultimate version. I tend to leave that one alone, its got most of my stuff on it.

Norton is a three machine version, and I have one install left. Question is do I buy W7 or Vista? or neither, and wait awhile till things calm down.
It would mostly be used for gaming, FSX and such.

Might have a chat with my local computer shop chap, he usually has some advice. I'm sure I see little £ signs in his eyes, when I go through the door...

Yeah that's the story of my norton use.

I read in pc magazine once about comparing antivirus scanners for home users so the free ones where included.

Norton got an overall average of 5/10 and AVG free got like 9.5/10.

Of course this was a few weeks ago... so things change over time but I doubt that it had changed that much.

Windows 7 is overall way better than Vista. Almost everyone will agree with that, though if you 'wait for things to calm down' it will be around 6 months to a year before it 'calms down.' You will have to expect a lot of patching within the next year, but is it really that hard to download patches...?

I used to transfer files over MSN or Skype when I had Norton on one computer...

AVG has always been good IMHO. I haven't used it personally for many years since we got Sophos at work. Sophos is for business use ofc (licenses start at 5 users) but I have it at home, being a remote user. Very good .
