I think that the Linux community, GNU and many more would have a massive objection to that point. It's not about being able to control it. Linus is still in control of the linux kernel and it's open source. Same with the GNU foundation and the Mozilla foundation.
I think what ar81 meant is that it isn't a matter of not being in control so much as at some point, some projects can become overwhelming requiring outside help.
