Yesterday, I was going through my Orbiter backups and found one of my -many- unfinished projects.
A couple of years back, me and Keith started a chess game in Orbiter, using 32 Ravenstars on a "chessboard" base with 64 Lpads.

This was a framerate killer ofcourse, but Keith was kind enough to provide meshes for actual chess-pieces as "vessels". Also the config files and dlls that accompanied them.

All I had to do was to finish the base and upload the whole pack on O-H as an addon, for anyone that would like to download it. RL issues, never allowed me to do it and the game and project were quickly forgotten. Untill yesterday, when I found the files again.

It took me about an hour to finish the chessboard base.

Then I thought that it would be cool to have a chessboard vessel with 64 docking ports, to play chess in orbit, not just landed. So a couple more hours later I had one. I also worked on the config files of Keith's chess-piece vessels to add docking ports and refine the parameters.

I am now at the point of polishing up, writing a PDF with instructions on how to use the addon (adding "chessboard" bases on planets/moons or adding a "ready to start" orbital chess game with the scenario editor) and creating a few scenarios, perhaps even some chess puzzles.

But then it hit me: "Who the h*** wants to play chess alone!?, Is this something that's worth uploading on O-H?"

That's why I started this thread.
-Do you think that this is an addon worth uploading on O-H?
-Is there a way to use this in OMP in order to play "live" games with online opponents?

Let me know what you think.

I would download it. It would be nice to study/analyse previous games while in interplanetary cruise. :)

I would like to see the pieces, as all the vessels available in Orbiter.

You could just e-mail .scn files to each other.

Yay!!! Space combat at last!

Good idea.

I could never play chess with pieces that all look the same, labeled or not.

Look closely, each XR2 has the corresponding piece drawn on the back.

On-topic, I think that this is worth uploading. If you give each piece RCS thrusters, I guess you could use it to play multiplayer (but I am no coder). It would be slow and tedious, but hey, it's chess in orbit, what more could you want

Zip file with the development so far, attached on post #1. Unzip in your Orbiter directory and run the scenarios in the OrbiterChess folder.

TODO:
-Documentation
-Add more scenarios

Comments and suggestions are welcome.
