Orion won't fly until 2014

I'm not an expert by any means, but, all of that seems entirely unnecessary and blisteringly costly. Why are they using this crap and not something more easily developed again?

To justify spending all that $ on STS. Most (outside) people don't consider research data as valuable as a big rocket. Even if it's just a SRB.
 
Watching NASA do this stuff is like watching an aging sports star who doesn't know how to quit while he's ahead, and just keeps going out onto the field to humiliate himself. His fans want him to quit so they can remember him in his glory days, but he stubbornly insists on pushing forward to yet another fiasco.

I know someone who is like that...
Well, lets remember: NASA has experience doing this, so i'm sure they have a reason for not using more advanced technologies, if they exist. Who knows: Maybe we dont want to reveal them because Terrorists will then find out where they are and bomb it.
