I am installing for the first time and am a bit confused by the texture upgrades.

I would like the best quality highest rez textures and i note that there are packs of textures with increasingly higher numbers as in Earth 11 and Earth 14, i am assuming the higher number is higher rez..is this correct?

I also saw download links for what are called LandSat High Resolution texture sets for Earth, Moon, Venus etc..

Are those higher even tho the numbers associated with them are lower? As Earth 8?

I see there are also atmopshere enhancements for Earth, and sky adjustments for Earth and Mars...i would welcome suggestions for any add ons that will provide the most detailed Earth with bases and cities and highest textures, and clouds...and same for moon and mars...

if anyone has the time...... i do appreciate the help a lot. this is an exciting project to be starting to study. thanks to all who are making it possible and to Dr Martin Schweiger for the source. Remarkable work.

Yes, higher level number means higher resolution of the texture.

Please note that you can use either the optional Hi-Res packs created for Orbiter 2010 or LandSat High Resolution texture sets for the same planet, not the both at the same time.

Orbiter uses 2 textures for the planet/moon when it's being rendered - low level 1-8 when you are far away, and high resolution level 9-14 when you are near the planet, so you need both texture packs to be from the same set to make the planet without seams when you zoom in or out from the planet / moon.

LandSat texture sets require both standard resolution LandSat textures and high resolution textures to be downloaded. They were created before release of Orbiter 2010, so their maximum resolution level is 10.

The Orbiter 2010 optional high resolution texture packs have their low level textures already in the Orbiter installation package.

Hi Orb, thank you very much for that info, that explains a lot...and helps a lot.

Can you tell me the differnece between the LandSat and the 14 level textures? I am seeking the highest and best possible textures.... thanks again for the reply.

And thank you for your very nice Lunar Texture set...those look great.

Level 11+14 Earth textures contain level 11 textures for all lands and level 14 for Florida. Some people say they look too plain (they are less saturated than LandSat textures), and for them LandSat textures look better.

IIRC, LandSat Earth textures are level 10 for all lands, they are more saturated and contrast than those from Orbiter 2010 high resolution Earth textures package. LandSat textures may look better than the default hi-res from higher altitude (but I didn't notice it on my CRT monitor). My personal preference is level 11+14 Earth because of higher details, but other people may argue, despite LandSat textures being lower level.

For Mars textures, I also use level 11 from the optional high resolution package, and not the LandSat textures. Last time I used the latter was with Orbiter 2006, and IIRC they are darker than Orbiter's default. For other planets I choose the ones with higher resolution, though I have 2 Orbiter installations with different Moon textures. One has level 11 Moon, and another my level 10 Moon.

And thank you for your very nice Lunar Texture set...those look great.
You're welcome. :tiphat:

OK thank you..i may try out both to see how they look but i do appreciate the info that really helps.... i am collecting the bases and upgrades for KSC, and the russian bases..wow, people sure have done a lot of work, amazing detail right down to the bus the astronauts come to the launch in. I met John Glenn years ago as my family is old Navy, and a number of the subsequent guys, and it will be really amazing to be able to experience a bit of what they all went thru.

I see there are detailed sets for Mercury, Gemini (two of them it appears) and Apollo ....again kudos to all the hard work by all hands...remarkable. thanks again.
