Gaming Race Into Space discussion thread

Well, I'll tell you that when I finish a game. Mostly bugfixes, historically accurate name of the hardware, and features that help the gameplay (simple but welcome things like displaying what autopurchase is going to cost you, etc...)

Oh and when you have a catastrophical failure and the safety factor drops, the R&D max % is now equal to best safety % you reached while flying the rocket. This is invaluable with russian hardware which has low R&D factors ! Like all the flight experience you have with a vehicle doesn't go to paper basket because of a single failure, and like you learn from mistakes.

Also one step has been removed for the duration missions (the A-level step, which doesn't require endurance from the 'nauts). This is only justice, those were very hard !!

And maybe I'm just lucky but I get a decent amount of money playing the Soviet, which were starving beyond reason in the last version.

'nauts morale is better, they don't massively desert at the first casualty.

Also, the return from the Moon has been reworked. No more "orbital insertion", "LEO activities", "deorbit burn" THEN "reentry" but directly "reentry corridor", then "reentry". Much more realistic, and removing those steps remove difficulty (which is welcome) !

Is this an actual release? Because I've had v1.0 for a couple of months at least, though it says its an alpha.

Mmh the previous release was v0.48 (from the official sourceforge project page).

The directory of the one I have is called "raceintospace_1.0alpha1". So it was just an alpha... Ahh, its gonna take 20 minutes to download!

Yes, it is. The version you have had (from May 26), had no installer but just an archive. The Windows installer for this one is dated at 2011-07-31 (along with 2011-07-28 for Debian package, and 2011-08-11 for RPM package).

+ There is a Gemini & a Voskhod icon in the root folder. :P

Ouch, my took 1.5 minutes. And that's using DSL.

Yeah... vacation slow and limited internet, what are you gonna do?

Anyways, after playing it for a while, I gotta say, there's some nice improvements. When you get a 'first' achievement, like "First EVA", a little box appears at the bottom telling you what first it is. The Autopurchase function when assembling the rockets for the mission now says how much it will cost. But I only played the Soviets so far.

W00t! Can't wait to check it out!

Well, I'll have to try it, but I'm not at all sure this change is a good idea.
It makes the "Gemini to the Moon" strategy even more powerful.

Wow, you're so lucky... I just started and the countdown shows 25 minutes. I can't download KSP as it stops at 20 MB, let's hope this one works...

Nice to see that they fixed that R&D "bug". Is it a bit easier now?

Well, I miserably failed with the Soviets, but had real bad luck. The americans didn't made it, it was a draw.

I LOVE this game and am really happy that this fan project re-created it ! I used to play the original SO MUCH ! It's one of those games that no one has ever heard of before yet is SO GOOD !! When I first discovered it, it was in a bargain bin in Toys R' Us back when they sold computer games in the late 80's, early 90's.

I wish someone will put the concept even further, extending the game to a Mars landing. :P

I always thought it would be nice if you could play up to the present day with more than just the US and Russia and be able to bring many more spacecraft and unmanned (real and concepts) into the game.

What LM should I buy to go to the Moon with the Voskhod? The LK or LKM?

The LKM (the lightest & most expensive one). Only one seat, automated. ;)

You'll probably need the Booster Kicker-B, too.

Edit : sorry, error, the LKM is the 2-seats version, the LK the original 1-seat.

Thanks. Now to re-R&D the Voskod because my 'good' luck got it stranded in orbit with 2 'nauts dead...
