Hey can anyone tell me or point me to a link that explains what controls on the joystick translate to what direction of travel when in linear mode.

eg. is pushing the joystick forward down thrust or foward thrust?

I tried to work it out in-sim but was quite hard without something steady to relate it to.

Pushing the joystick forward would thrust down.

Here take a look at page 73 of the Orbiter manual (~\Orbiter\Docs\Orbiter.pdf)

Just found this thread, which addresses my question. Almost. The page ref is now 90/91 in the 2010 manual. In that document, the illustration for Fwd/Back translation shows NO joystick command.

Does that mean the joystick doesn't support Fwd/Back translation? Or is it just a glitch in the documentation?

I ask because, try as I might, I cannot get the DG to translate forward to close for docking on the ISS. (I'm a newbie and just learning the tools).

I'm also using a laptop with no numpad, and no function key that overlays on on the regular keyboard. It's really a pain. But that's a different story.
