Reentry to a base

I can usually re-enter just fine with most ships, and can also do it with heat sensitive ones, such as the XR-2 or DGIV. What I don't understand is how to target a base and re-enter on a flight path to it. I've only done it once with the shuttle PB, and that was using the only guide I found, which is meant for landing on the moon, and the only reason I didn't die is because it isn't heat sensitive. So how do I do it?
