Computer mouse inventor Doug Engelbart dies at 88

Engelbart developed the tool in the 1960s as a wooden shell covering two metal wheels, patenting it long before the mouse's widespread use.

He also worked on early incarnations of email, word processing and video teleconferences at a California research institute.

Did he?

Humor aside, I remember a time decades after the 60s when there was only a keyboard. So definitley ahead of his time.

Curse you Matt, beat me to it!

RIP Doug Englehardt. Today I fondle your creation with sadness.

Douglas was a bit of a personal hero of mine and a fellow alumni of Oregon State University. He believed that computers could make the world a better place and dedicated his career to make it so. Thanks in large parts to his efforts, we have the tools to connect the world together.

I remember useing a computer mouse back in 1986 at an Information Technology Center. I was amazed when I pulled the rubber of the ball and saw that it was a metal ball bearing. The ITC staff wasn't very happy at the time, but I had hours of fun with that ball bearing. I have bearings of differing sizes and cannot understand my fasination with them. I still play with them under a glass table with a magnet.

I am sorry to hear about Mr. Engelbart's passing. :(
Quite the visionary.
