This about about a Fictinoal RTLS Abort Senerio with Discovery.
This is STS-51J launch video combined with An RTLS Simulation from a Traning Mission. This is Still very cool, makes you get the idea of what it would be like if there was an RTLS abort.

This Ends with a Ditch, after all 3 Engines cut off.

The soundtrack is certainly interesting. It's good to know they do simulate all those risky abort nodes thoroughly. It doesn't really make sense to dub it over a nominal launch video, though.

Someone should try and get a full recording of a successful RTLS abort simulation and dub it over an Orbiter video. That would be cool.

Well, I agree, It does give you an Idea about what they would be talking about.

It's sends a chill down my spine listening to that. You know the people who practice this do it until they can do it in their sleep, but it kind of like practicing for a nuclear war: you do it because you have to, but God help you if you ever have to use that training.

I did find it odd that it sounds like Eileen Collins is commanding, but the mission controllers say that "he" needs to get the AOA down. Maybe this is mixed audio with the 2005 mission?

Agreed Andy, its rather Scary that an RTLS abort might actually happen.
Its from Audio from a Traning mission from the Early 1990's

I think this is relevant enough to revive the thread:-

I have put this soundtrack over an Orbiter scenario to show (approximately) what would be going on.

Can Orbiter simulate engine failures in the stock STS? What about the addon STS's?
If I wanted a certain engine to shut off on the press of a button could I do that?
How about the engine shutting down at a certain time after launch?

As horrific as an RTLS abort scenario would have been, remember that the two lost shuttles had NO abort options available to them during their accidents. Better to have a plan, any plan, than no plan at all.

Maybe so, but they all flew anyway !! :salute:
