I apologise in advance if this is the wrong forum to post this - but it seemed appropriate enough.

Would it be possible to use a satellite phone from LEO or GEO? I know very little about how satellite phones work, or if there are different types of signals and technology used, but the thought occurred to me in one of those 'lightbulb' moments.

Should be possible from LEO, but probably not from GEO.

I don t want to do the maths now, but the Doppler-Shift could be a problem.

It would depend entirely upon the way the satellite phone system involved was built. Where are you calling to? Another spacecraft (if so, in what kind of orbit)? A random phone on the ground? The answers to those questions will help determine if it's even necessary.

Check out the orbits of the iridum satellites.
