Shuttles to Mars?

Another thing to add to the long list of reasons why this would be a bad idea. The shuttle was designed to operate in zero G conditions. If you induced any kind of artificial gravity it is unlikely that any of the systems would work. For instance; toilet, water circulation, air circulation, sleeping berths, hinges on doors. Could you even open and close the cargo bay doors? ;)
 
Besides, I don't think you can fire ICBM engines for that long. Remember, they were designed to fire for a certain amount of time, and the ship would most likely fire them for much longer.
That's why you would need four to six of them.
And apart from all these issues, if ANYTHING fails, it's game over.
That applies to any space flight.;)
 
I was about to say, Apollo 13.

Any mission where you get the crews back in one piece is a succsessful mission.
