I've attempted to run two versions of the Beta above 100830. Version 111105, and version 110822 which is the first beta version. In doing so I get an error stating that the "side by side configuration" is not correct. After digging on the web, I found several references to installing VC2005 Redistributable SP1 such as at this post: http://www.orbiter-forum.com/project.php?issueid=889.

After installing and uninstalling it several times including using the version that came with Orbiter and also downloading it from Microsoft, I attempted to download the 3 dll's by hand and install them manually in a directory that matched the name given by the post I just mentioned at which I realized that Windows won't let me claiming I don't have the necessary privileges despite running command prompt as an administrator, and seeing as how I don't even know if that would work anyway since I don't really know the necessary directory name, I'm at a point where I'm ready to give up.

Seeing as how this issue has been addressed by several people and all of them seem to get it to work by installing VC2005 Redistributable SP1 as listed on the post, I'm expecting to get possible backlash for posting this again, but I have to try. I'm running Windows 7 of course which it wouldn't surprise me one bit if that was the problem such as not allowing the needed install of an older version of VC2005, and if anti-virus could be a problem I've tried disabling it which made no difference. I'm running Avast and nobody has complained about it that I've seen, but they have complained about AVG.

I've tried uninstalling VC2005, rebooting, reinstalling, and rebooting, to my dismay. Does anyone have any ideas besides just sticking with 100830? The reason I want to run the Beta is because the program (100830) locks up whenever I install any kind of high end textures, but I'll deal with that later. Am I the only one having this problem with VC2005? Is there anything I can do about it? Would it matter if I ran an older version of Orbiter despite not really wanting to do that? Any help would be appreciated?

One other thing before I hang this up was that I could not download even a copy of VC2005 Express as if that would help. It was just an idea I had that perhaps installing Express would force it to install all the necessary files and intact directory structure. I could download SP1, but that won't do you any good without the original files which aren't on Microsoft's site anymore.

You don't need to uninstall the redistributable package, nor install its older version. Just installing the newest version should let you use programs using older version of the VC++ 2005 redistributable as also the newest.

I found several references to installing VC2005 Redistributable SP1 such as at this post: http://www.orbiter-forum.com/project.php?issueid=889.
But did you install "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (x86)", or "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update (x86)", which I believe is currently the newest?

You don't do that. The libraries need to be correctly registered in system, and just copying them by hand to a subdirectory in WinSxS folder won't do that. And how do you know you downloaded the correct, 8.0.50727.6195 version?

Is your Windows 64-bit? Did you install x64 or x86 version, or both? For Orbiter, you need x86 version (32-bit). If you have 64-bit system you can also install the x64 version, but it will be only used by 64-bit programs, which Orbiter isn't.

Anyway, you can try installing all (without uninstalling or installing previous versions):
  1. Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update:
    • x86 (for both x86 and x64 systems) - required by Orbiter beta
    • x64 (only for x64 systems)

  2. Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update:
    • x86 (for both x86 and x64 systems)
    • x64 (only for x64 systems)

  3. Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update:
    • x86 (for both x86 and x64 systems)
    • x64 (only for x64 systems)

This caused the exact same error for me, so I'd suggest you try that first.

It's working

I don't get it. I hunted and installed what I thought were the correct files. Apparently Microsoft must not be clear on what the newest version is; because, I looked carefully and still did not find the correct version. Now that I have used your links, I have the correct versions installed, and to be certain I don't lose them I have backed them up; because, I fear I could not find them again if I had to. I installed all the x86 versions and to be certain I had them for other programs, I also installed the x64 versions although Orbiter won't use them.

I worked for over 4 hours yesterday trying to fix this, and read over and over this was the problem. I even went to the links listed in the other forum posts in order to do the downloads and still did not get it right. I really don't understand how I could have worked all that time and find out this was the problem. I'm glad it is working of course, but it is so frustrating. Makes a person feel very foolish.

Thank you for your help.
